3-D adds little, but The Lion King is still as incredible as ever. - estefan
The Lion King is one of the most astoundingly visual animated features ever made. So, seeing it on the big screen again since its original release in 1994 was a great experience I was very happy to re-live. Needless to say, the film still holds up incredibly well after so many years. The story is rock-solid with a great message about the importance of one's past and the maturing from a young man to one ready to lead and that alone is enough to pull one into The Lion King. Every character is so well-drawn and developed from our fantastic lead Simba to the cunning villain Scar to that lovable and hilarious meerkat and warthog duo of Timon and Pumbaa. Of course, the animation is some of the best delivered from the talented group of animators at Disney, both in character and in the backgrounds. The songs by Elton John and Tim Rice also contain that classic Disney feel of memorability and charm. I had to really force myself to not start singing along to the characters.
As for the 3-D itself, I was slightly disappointed. There are some impressive sequences like the "Circle of Life" opening, the wildebeest stampede and the iconic log-walking scene. However, most of the time, the character look rather distant from their environments and even themselves, like Pumbaa's snout sticking out strangely and some character's eyes look like they are bulging out of their sockets. It was distracting, but they could have done a better job, but the 3-D is not the main attraction. Come on, It's The Lion King, for Pete's sake!Classic film that looks sensational on Blu-ray - eli_quincy
The recent box-office success of a re-released version of "The Lion King" is hardly surprising. This classic film was made during a period in which Disney seemed to aim mainly at making timeless classics that could be enjoyed for generations, and the epic "Lion King" certainly fits the bill. If you're planning on viewing on Blu-ray, I'll say that the video quality is truly excellent. This film has never looked better.
