This film follows the backroom positioning during a Democratic primary campaign. The number of premier actors is impressive and Gosling, Clooney, P.S. Hoffman and Giamatti do not fail to disappoint. The story has a few unexpected turns and more captivating subplots than predecessors such as Primary Colors and Bulworth. However, I found it difficult to read the main character, Stephen (played by Gosling), and his motivations and ambitions. Specifically, his actions at the end of the movie took me off guard. The film highlights the dog-eat-dog world of politics, the tireless efforts required during a campaign, and the lengths opponents will go to swing the polls a few points. Clooney directed this film and has proven again to have talent on the other side of the camera too.The Ides of March - Eklektik67
I watched this film mostly because of the actors that were in it and I like political thriller and for awhile, it worked and kept my interest.
However, when Gosling is offered to switch teams, it became more predictable! I knew it was only a matter of time until he found something that would hurt Clooney's chances of winning. In the end he went with best for him and therefore left any high ground and loyalty.
It did point out the state of American politics well and that unless you are some sort of saint, there will always be someone digging dirt and not the kind that would make any difference to what kind of President one would make. It boggles the mind that many former ones wouldn't have had a chance today and what a loss that would have been.
Despite its limitations, worth seeing.Smart, edgy, and engaging - chrisky6
This is a smart, edgy, political thriller. Gosling vs. Clooney -- who will come out on top? Paul Giamatti and PSM are excellent as frayed, back-stabbing campaign managers. It's a shame that Clooney and Gosling don't get more camera time squaring off together: both play their roles naturally. The moral message falls flat at the end and will leave you wishing there were a few more moves and depth to this political chess game.
