Scenery and birds!! - MovieLola
First of all I should state I'm biased about this one. I'm pretty crazy about nature and birds. The best parts of this movie are those things - sweeping vistas of "Alaska" (doesn't matter if it was actually filmed there), cute diagrams of where they found birds, nerdy birding jokes, bird songs and calls, and all that good stuff. The worst part by far is Jack Black and the lame attempt to make him a romantic leading man while casting him as an overweight loser at the same time. It just didn't work, and he didn't make it funny. It might just be best to ignore that part. Some people might find the idea of grown men leaving their wives at home to chase birds unrealistic, but I've seen it in action so I bought that aspect of the plot. It was a bit odd that some of the trailers and descriptions sold it as a personal quest. That is definitely a part of it, but overall the goal is to see the most birds in a year, and what drives all of the three men. If you don't know a lot about the hobby, it would be an interesting glimpse into birdwatching (aka "birding"), the subculture, and the weird types it sometimes attracts. (Yep, I told my parents to watch it so they could better understand me). However, it focuses on the more extreme competitive 'listers' - who understandably provide a lot of comedic value. Even though it's not a perfect film, maybe it could be a 'gateway drug' for those who might like to get out into nature and see birds. Your local naturalist club can help you become just like Owen and Steve :)
