Good classic aliens. - deathbysedan

Even all these years later, the first alien movie was surprisingly advanced for it's time. If you consider Star Wars had only been released two years before, this movie really did deliver good believable effects. Aside from some of the cheesy CRT screens stuck in walls and blinky light panels in some of the scenes in the ship, things were done really well.

It's unfortunate that all four of these films are lumped and rated together.

"Alien" is one of the finest science fiction films made. Yes, it's about a deadly alien stalking the crew of an enormous, isolated space ship. But that's just the film's subject. It's the treatment of that subject that makes that film so great.

In making "Alien," Ridley Scott made the film grounded and real. The characters aren't romantic or heroic. They're complex and flawed in all the ways humans are. Aesthetically, the film is absolutely gorgeous, offering a view of life in space that contrasts sharply with the "fun" portrayals that had preceded it, like in "Star Wars." All of these elements create a compelling Freudian analysis of male anxiety with the feminine, the theme of "Alien."

As is often the case, the sequels that followed are not worthy of the original. In large part that's because the people at the studios seem to be unable to imagine a sequel that breaks from the formula of the original film. That formula is--protagonists in a confined are stalked by alien(s); few escape. That's it, all four films with inane wrinkles added. By the end of the second film, the aliens aren't even scary any more.

REVIEW FOR "ALIENS"

Great sequel to the amazing 1979 movie "Alien". The beginning was a bit slow (took an hour into the film before we first saw - briefly - an alien) and the ending was a bit of a stretch, as if they needed to add something (the massive alien cannot fight against the airlock, but for some reason Ripley can by barely holding on to the ladder), but overall, very entertaining and compelling. Even if it does start slow and slightly overdone by the marines' acting (more of a bunch of teenage boys than trained marines), the suspense builds up nicely, and once the action starts, you're in for a ride.

REVIEW FOR "ALIEN 3"

Not a classic like Alien, and definitely not as jammed pack action-wise as Aliens, but compelling and entertaining enough to watch. This movie could have easily fallen into the trap of repeating the same storyline of mission goes wrong, alien comes in, alien kills, Ripley kills it, end of story. But instead a nice twist was inserted, the alien shown a bit more, yet again more explanation on its species and the company, and even glimpses of the alien's point of view from time to time. It might have not been planned to do 3 movies in the series at first, but they all work well together to slowly reveal a bit more about the aliens as we go along. For those who watched and enjoyed the first 2 movies of the series, this film will probably be enjoyable for what it adds to what we already know, even if the action is a little slow. For newcomers to Alien, I'd suggest watching the first 2 movies first.
