The Missing

The Missing is the story of Maggie Gilkeson (Cate Blanchett), a young woman raising her two daughters in an isolated and lawless wilderness. When her oldest daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) is kidnapped by a psychopathic killer with mystical powers (Eric Schweig), Maggie is forced to re-unite with her long estranged father (Jones) to rescue her. The killer and his brutal cult of desperados have kidnapped several teenage girls, leaving a trail of death and horror across the desolate landscape of the American Southwest.

Unfortunately, Ron Howard's opus The Missing fails this fundamental test. Though Howard's ambition to create a drama about the healing of a family using the Western as his canvas is admirable and works intermittently, The Missing ultimately fails not because it isn't well made, but because of the script. This is not to say that The Missing completely misfires. The Missing is simply unable to deliver on its promise, which is all any story has to do. The trailers lead me to believe that this was a horror/thriller which it isn't. It is a mixture of Western, drama and suspense with a supernatural element in it. The main strand of the story is the search for the kidnapped Lilly but also central to the story is the strained relationship between Maggie and her father who deserted his family. The father who once destroyed her family is now needed to help save her family. What makes this film interesting is that, in a Western, it is unusual for family drama to be central to the story. The film looks at family, loyalty, relationships and bravery. It is also unusual, for a Western, that the lead role is a strong independent female character. Another element that adds to the movie is the supernatural threads that run through it giving a dark menacing feel. There is an interesting conflict amongst the mixture of "witch-doctor spells", old wives tales, the bible and, of course, good and evil. Overall the pace of the film is good but there are one or two slow parts in the middle where the story lags just a little. The outcome of the chase is cleverly delayed as you cannot be sure what's going to happen as the story unfolds. Wild wild west, Ron Howard-style. Give it a look.

Tommy Lee Jones Delivers Strong Performance In "The Missing" - bwod

Director Ron Howard has created an "opus" in "The Missing". Tommy Lee Jones provides a strong performance as a man who has adopted a Native-American way of life. He is marginalized by both whites and Indians, but shows in his strengths that he is supremely equipped to help his daughter to locate his abducted grand-daughter. Eric Schweig contributes a particularly frightening take of a shaman (witch) who relishes hanging rattle-snakes in trees, amongst other evil-doings. This one is not for the weak of heart. Violence permeates the screen. But it is a good example of the western genre and deserves being seen. One and a half thumbs up.

The Missing - Wendylee

This movie is well worth watching and, I think, better than its 3-star rating. It is not what I expected. It was billed as a thriller/mystery but in fact is more like a very well done western. It includes one of the best bad guys ever - a shaman indian who is REALLY creepy. There is a bit of blood and gore so not for the young or squeamish. The ending also is not totally happy - unusual for a Hollywood film.
