What? - Gaucho

Every six months, I want to watch this Brit show that "defied convention at every turn" and when I do, I get bored. The last one I rented from Zip was a classic episode: it classically showed the flaw of this story.
I watched the first episode of "The Return of the Creature" and found most of the action took place on two people standing on top of a rooftop. They don't talk, they just look at each other and telepathically (voice over) communicate. And then one of the actors is threatened by something invisible and he pushes himself over.
What?
Only the BBC financier could be excited about that("Oh, no sets and the monster is invisible! Great! Here's a pounder, make a show!")! The characters are supposed to be trascendent, so they're not human...and can't be interesting, there are no sets, no action, and everything is done by monotone dialogue.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I put the first disc of this series into my DVD player -- I had watched Dr. Who as a child, but this was uncharted territory. It turns out this is one of the overlooked masterpieces of science fiction and fantasy television. Some of the effects may not have aged well in this era of CGI, but the stories are unnerving, involving, and unpredictable. I only wish there were more!

I certainly enjoyed these, but I also think they're the kind of story you have to have a taste for. They're enigmatic stories about dangerous holes in time, and believe me, you won't get a whole lot of information about what underlies these stories. That being said, I have to agree with another reviewer -- the series shows a tremendous amount of imagination and creativity coupled with the expenditure of almost no money. And frequently, those are the most interesting stories; instead of throwing millions into A-list stars and special effects, they put their time into nuanced scripts and direction and camera work. For Adventure #2, I was 90 minutes into it before I realized that the whole story was going to be told on a single set; claustrophobic, but effective for the story. McCallum and Lumley do great work (and it's nice to see the beautiful Lumley pre-Botox) with some unknown guest actors working VERY hard to please the audience. If you can overcome the need to know who these people are and what the heck they're actually doing, you might enjoy yourself very much. But you have to like ghost stories with a twist, or else don't bother.
