this extended cut is so worth the rental. Kate Bekinsale is perfect in this role and I cannot think of anyone else who could have pulled it off. If you are a fan of this franchise you definitly need to see the extras here. I watched it twice to catch everything and I think this is the movie that should have hit the big screen. The effects are awesome but not over the top the acting is very good as is the story. The bonus features on disc 2 are also worth the rental.

Great movie with dumb special features - Garion

Of the recent vampire movies, this movie is at the top of my list. The characters are interesting, the action is thrilling, and look of the movie is great. Beckinsale and Speedman provide above average performances, but the standout is Michael Sheen as Lucian.

As for the extended cut, there was only one scene that I noticed added, all the others were too subtle to notice (or they fit the flow of the movie so well that you don't notice them).

The greatest weakness of this DVD is the extra features. There is a documentary ("Fang vs. Fiction") about how vampires and werewolves really exist. It plays more like an add for the movie filled with freaks, although some of the history behind the myths is interesting. The commentary by Beckinsale. Speedman, and Wiseman is so dumb that I stopped watching after 45 minutes, and I only watched it that long because I thought it would get better.

Get the DVD for the movie, skip the special features.

Good mythology, but weak everything else - Lone_Wolf

I gotta say, I'm a bit of a sucker for mythology. Anything to do with it seems to attract me and there is nothing like a good myth to interest me. That is why I often was very engrossed with Underworld. It constructed a quite interesting mythology about a centuries old war between vampires and werewolves that has been waged right under the lowly humans noses the entire time. This, and the great sets, visuals, and costumes are what I really like about Underworld.

But of course, Hollywood always manages to screw it up. The whole plot with Micheal, the human the werewolves are after was sometimes a bit weak and the action was almost always substandard, and being that this is part action movie, that is not a good thing. In particular the ending was just horrible. The action was unfocused and it seemed like guys just ran around shooting at whatever moved, and the final good guy/bad guy duel was terrible. Ugh.

The only thing that saves this from a rotten rating is what I mentioned before; myth, sets, visuals and costumes. They were well done enough in Underworld to semi make up for it's other misgivings. I wouldn't go buy it, but if you are a fan of this of movie you might want to rent it if there is nothing else, especially if you can find the Superbit so you get a DTS track. Otherwise, skip it.
