Yes, you can tell it was shot in 1995. Yes, it followed the same template as most of the shows out there. And yes, it is dated...
Still, there are some remarkable ideas and behind this show. The writers or someone did a lot of thought creating this universe and the plots benefit from it (and are not bogged down by the "geek"). Sadly, if this was made today there would have been a little more freedom to explore and lengthen story arcs (but is that always a good thing [ex. Lost]).
The characters are great, even though it's a dated telling of their story (and truth be told, I have a small crush on the female lead). A good offering and fun. Plus, it's pretty family friendly.
The episodes seem a bit out of order (which is tough on it's arcs) with the season's cliffhanger happening a few shows BEFORE the last show. This could be the network reordering it as they've already ditched the show (ex. Firefly). It's sad because the cliffhanger ends with the female lead (the one I have the crush on) dying without any season 2 to rescue her. Alas, it's a strand floating loose out in fiction...

Feels like an ABC drama like 7th Heaven or something of that ilk. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it is not your average scifi vehicle with the typical heroes and villains and cool weapons and ships and vehicles and technology. It takes place only a few decades from now and involves workers on a cargo ship that crash and have to survive long enough to meet up with a ship carrying terraformers and pioneers to the new planet they have discovered. It is just families, couples, employees, etc. on a lonely planet for several months with only what they brought with them to survive on. It is kind of like Lost, another NBC vehicle that actually managed to pan out, surprisingly. This one did not pan out back in 1993, but is done with a decent budget and the actors are somewhat likeable and the stories are not too bad, overall. I would recommend the average scifi fan to at least give it a chance, but for the more patient and knowledgeable fan, this will intrigue you. It is an interesting addition to the 90's scifi explosion. It was a great time for scifi TV, even though the X-Files was the only survivor out of over twenty shows that were developed by the big four networks. This one was somewhere in the middle, but at least it is a full season of episodes, unlike most of its competition at that time.

I remembered watching and really enjoying Earth 2 when it was on television, and it pretty much lived up to expectations.

There was a little bit less "hard" science fiction in it than my taste. The basis of it was there, but was just not really emphisized very much.

The characters interacted very well, though the kids were a little more obnoxious than I remember.

Definately worth zipping for the science fiction buff.
