Beneath the surface lies the future.

Earth, the middle of the 21st century: humanity has colonized the oceans, and the United Earth Oceans are the organization in charge of keeping it safe. Captain Nathan Bridger (Roy Scheider) has come out of retirement to captain the UEO's SeaQuest DSV, the most powerful submarine in the world.

I had heard a lot of good comments about this series, but to my disappointment, it didn't manage to grip me once the first episodes were over. Basically, I failed to develop much interest for the main characters, and while the underwater world is cool, the wonderment is quickly over as it is more a character-driven series and the underwater shots quickly become the same.

As for the characters, they were just too much two dimensional, I guess. Darwin, the dolphin, kept me watching a little longer, but he isn't a main character and mostly swims around the submarine without having much else to do.

Anyway, after watching the second disk in FFW for lack of true interest, I decided to stop watching it altogether. I guess it isn't the kind of series I love.

It's hard to say anything bad about the first season of Seaquest DSV. It's ambitious, cutting edge and has enough heart to keep you coming back for more. The show hasn't aged too badly either, although the cgi is primitive by today's standards it's still very watchable. My only beef about this set is the studio's decision to use double sided dual layer discs which practically invite fingerprints, scratches and dirt from regular handling as opposed to regular single sided dual layer where at least it has a label side you can hold onto and not worry about accidentally smudging the disc surface

Seaquest is a futuristic show (2017 to be exact but it was filmed in 1993) about a large submarine that patrols the ocean under the flag of the UEO, much like the United Nations, just underwater. To any viewer of any Star Trek Series, especially Star Trek the Next Generation, this show may strike you as being unoriginal. There is the wise old Captain, his much younger first officer and a genious teenager not in the military.

At times I wondered how to react to the show. It was hard to become completely open minded to any an "anything is possible mentality" such as in Star Trek since the show takes place in the not so distant future, however after having accepted the existance of underwater colonies, I still found a lot of the epsiodes way too far fetched. However, if you can deal with some complete science fiction episodes followed by completely serious scientific episodes you will have a great time watching this series. I think that the producers did a great job for a TV show produced in the mid 1990's especially with the underwater CGI. (which is still fake looking but what the heck?)

The challenges I believe for the SeaQuest series is that the ocean is only a finite space that is completely charted unlike Star Trek were you can explore space literally forever. Even in season 1 it looked like the producers were stretching their ideas a little too thin, and it doesn't surprise me that the show was eventually cancelled after dying a slow death.

I still rate it 4 stars because it was highly entertaining especially in the scientific aspects. Also note that there are 6 episodes per disk. (besides the frist since the pilot is 2 hours long) I almost made the mistake of returning the first disk without watching all the episodes.
