The 1998 edition of Giro d'Italia is simply one of the most thrilling and dramatic races in more than a decade. The battle commences right from the prologue time trial and continues to the final and phenomenally mountainous week, when Marco Pantani makes his move. Going into the final time trial, Pantani has only a minute lead, but he delivers the time trial performance of his life, cheered on by thousands of fervent fans. In addition to great climbing and time trial action, the sprinters get a chance to show their finishing skills - and as usual, "Super" Mario Cipollini is the pick of them, winning four stages and equaling Eddy Merckx's total of 25 stage wins at the Giro.
