The con is on.

The art of the con is not dead. You merely can not see it. If you do see it, then it is inevitably always too late. It is an invisible crime built on the premise of finding someone who wants something for nothing and then giving them nothing for something. Choose the mark, reel them in, play on their desires and set them up. It does not matter whether they are black or white, male of female but they must be strictly major league. There are no quick fixes. Patience is truly a virtue in this game. All you have to do is make them believe.

Recommended by a friend because she knows I like heist stories. We were so-so on this. The first episode was a bit annoying but we liked the second and third ones better. We intend to watch the rest of the season at some point.

We did particularly enjoy the episode about the Mondrian painting.

Great fun - DWM54

"Hustle" is a limited run BBC series featuring an ensemble cast that runs the "long con"- confidence games with long, complicated procedures but great financial returns. Each season is only six shows, but each episode is about an hour long,so they feel like short movies. It's produced by the same team that does Spooks (MI-5 in North America).

Hustle is a comedy/drama that features an engaging cast and lots of plot twists. The only jarring note for some might be the occasional breaking of the fourth wall- significant eyebrow wiggles at the viewer at crucial plot points, and sometimes even directly addressing the audience while still in character. The first episode had a brief song and dance that took place in one of the lead's imaginations, a la Ally McBeal. It's not for all tastes, but it's never dull. The con team is lead by former Man From UNCLE star Robert Vaughn.

I love any movie to do with cons IF they are done well. The Sting, Nine queens, House of Games are some ones worth watching. The problem sometimes is that experienced movie goers are so expecting a twist it is hard to fool us. So it is nice that we get these 1 hour episodes that are mini movies about cons with a regular cast to care about. Every episode is fun and who doesn't like a good con?
The fact I only gave it 3.5 stars is the fact that I felt that they took ideas from some of these movies and recycled them in a slighly new way. However, there are episodes like Rats that felt new and fresh and had me guessing until the end.
Also, while the cast is good I feel it could have been stronger. the lead of Micky/Michael in particular felt like a bad choice to me. A fine actor but he comes across as too young to be "the best brain in the con business". They also needed to do a better job showing me why he was the best. Until the third episode "Rats" he didn't do anything that made me think "ah ha! he is the smartest guy in the room".
Overall a very good series that got stronger as it went on.
