A few films ago, Brosnan breathed new life into the franchise. I doubt it was his fault, but this one sucks the air back out. The CGI effects are horrible, ruining the film beyond even what the writers and director did to it. I can't think of a single good performance or feature to recommend it.

Still good, but stretching it. - filmgeek

Well, this film is definately a mixed bag. It has all the Bond standards: villain, fights, chases, sexy women, and a happy ending, but it has some serious drawbacks too: an over-reliance on CGI, and to much of a sci-fi plot.

Still fun to watch, but definately not the greatest addition to the canon.

Recommended.

Surprised to give a Bond film four stars - Moir

Dame Judi Dench is brilliant as M. I felt Brosnan's way of shifting between the near parody humour of the Bond films and moments of gritty realism {the way he looked, after the 14 months of torture thinking he is before a firing squad.. like a man whose abused body, despite his control over it, shows in its twisted and uneven posture how fatigue in pain can drain the courage in anyone}.

I thought the great sword fight scene was worthy of any of the great old time adventure films and then some.

In a few scenes the camera cut off just as Brosnan started to show a ghost of a smile or Halle Berry started to roll her eyes but so faintly and with such timing it was nearly subliminal.. without this, I felt those scenes with their outrageous lines would have been too much but with it I felt humour lubricated the advance of the story surprisingly well.

I thought the film was a great accomplishment. On the other hand, I am perhaps not a typical Bond film fan as I was astonished to like this one so much.

I find myself thinking also of John Cleese playing Q so brilliantly and so straight, and yet .... with a certain depth of something ... like deadpan jokes beneath the surface (and Brosnan's timing and handling of the scene fitting right in).

So I was really impressed with everyone in the film.. I felt I had to give it four stars . But of 'my' four star films it is probably one of the least likely for me to view again .. It is just I felt most of the actors were all so very good and the director and the special effects people were so outstanding. . I could not help myself. [My admiration for what they did was so great I am looking for other films with Dame Dench, Brosnan, and other of the actors, and by Lee Tamahori (the director) and if I can find them the second unit director who engineered the special effects. I am left with awe for their talent.]
