Dungeons & Dragons: The Complete Animated Series
Dungeons & Dragons
was one of CBS' most popular animated series, airing from 1983-1986, and later on FoxKids. Created by legendary Marvel Productions, the series was base on the popular TSR role-playing game created in 1974 - which spawned an entire industry! Now, in a set bursting with magical Special Features, fans can roll the dice to see the entire

series in a beautiful five-disc set. Come back to the realm of action, adventure, and enchantment with...

Fantasy series aimed a very young children

The credits looked fairly impressive for the time (Marvel Entertainment produced, while Toei Studios in Tokyo handled the animation), but the results were no better than many comparable fantasy series aimed at very young children. The fantasy world did not seem all that fantastic. Dragons and giants and orcs abounded, but overall the landscape of this magical realm felt less foreign and threatening than any other unknown forest. The action animation felt stiff and clunky, and the fights lacked imaginative staging.
Jeffrey Scott (Thundarr the Barbarian) wrote many of the episodes, and did so I suspect rather quickly. The stories seem derivative of other sources. There is even an episode which borrows its plot from Jack and the Beanstalk! Also, the story complications and twists do not surprise. Worst are the one-dimensional characters, (the stalwart archer, the cowardly cavalier, the insecure magician, the fearless acrobat, the impulsive boy and his mothering older sister). The characters generate little interest or sympathy and do not grow or go though much in the way of challenges.
None of this criticism, however, begins to address the key problem with the series. The game Dungeons and Dragons became popular on high school and college campuses. It has a complex and versatile simulation system designed to promote imaginative world building and character play, and one that spun off hundreds of novels and influenced a generation of science fiction and fantasy writers. Yet the producers of this series created a very routine and familiar looking fantasy series, hard to distinguish from He-man or Thundarr or She-Ra or Thunder cats or others of this era. It seems as if less creative energy went into this series than that which found its way into many, many game scenarios being played at the time by people typically older than the target audience of this show.
Series has not aged well...

...and was not very good to begin. It may appeal to very young children, but viewers over ten will be bored. There is an overall lack of excitement here. The action animation is simplistic and seems slightly jerky. The stories lacked complexity. The fight scenarios lacked action and were usually over too quickly, following a lengthy lead-up. There was little violence and the characters never really seemed to encounter dangers which they could not escape by running away. There was no overall story arc which carried through the series beyond simply the characters' desire to go home to their own world. Also, the characters themselves lacked depth, and the one interesting character, Eric the cavalier, was only interesting because he possessed all of the bad traits in the group (cowardice, greed, braggadocio).

This brings yuo back to the good old Saturday Mornings when only the major networks were showing animations ... D&D is a product of those days ... limited animation and easy storyline ... but still interesting with a little bit of suspense. What I really enjoy about this set are the Fun Facts ... really interesting behind the scenes facts that you would never know.
