James Bond 01: Dr. No
The Ultimate Edition
His name is Bond, James Bond. And here, in his explosive film debut, Ian Fleming's immortal action hero blazes through one of his most spectacular adventures. Sean Connery embodies the suave yet lethal cool of Agent 007 as he battles the mysterious Dr. No, a scientific genius bent on destroying the U.S. space programme.

A darker Bond - more like Fleming's

It didn't take long for James Bond on screen to become glib, flippant, and frankly a little silly, paving the way for Roger Moore's era. But this first Sean Connery film shows a darker version of Bond, closer to Fleming's character on the page. Aside from one Bond-ism about a car crash ("I think he was on his way to a funeral"), this Bond is more serious and cold-blooded (watch him blow the smoke out of his silencer after shooting Dent, whom he didn't really have to shoot) or the way he gets his pleasure from the "Chinese" girl several times even though he knows he's turning her in to the police. As fun as Goldfinger and Thunderball are, it would have been a different series (and not necessarily worse) if they had kept the tone closer to Dr. No.
First installment in a series that might never end

This is a movie that I have probably seen over ten times in parts or in its entirety and I still enjoy it every time. When I watch this one, I am always surprised that they already had the complete recipe almost 50 years ago and have made so few changes since. Of course, it does help that it was based on immensely popular novels that really defined the character well but, still, the production team made it work right from the start. The cast is good doing a pretty good acting job with a well written dialogue and very good characters. The sets and locations are great, the soundtrack is great and the camera work is great. Although there are not really any gadgets in this one, one can see the attention put to the scientific side through the development of the storyline, particularily when the ultimate confrontation takes place. The storyline here may not be the best of the Bond franchise but it is certainly representative of all the subsequent installments. Highly recommended.
The Icon of Bond

This is the one that started it all. It has the epic introduction, the charm, the action, and of course it has Honey Ryder. It is hard to beat a good Bond film, and it is especially hard when you can look back at Dr. No and witness the birth of an icon. This is also the Bond that the recent Casino Royale has reverted back to: Bond is cut-throat, unremorseful, and sexist. Connery is the image of Bond because he is Bond, sounds simple. But his performance is truly masterful.
