In Season 10, Vala, a former Goa'uld host turned freedom-fighter, joins SG-1 in their battle to defend the galaxy from the holy war of the Ori. Meanwhile, relations between the Jaffa and Earth continue to be strained. It all comes to a sizzling end on the finale.

Outgoing Wormhole - Angora

After nine seasons of having only lukewarm feelings about Stargate, I watched the first episode of season ten, and swore off the series forever. Stargate decided to spite me by proceeding to have the best season it's ever had.

There are two good things that happen in season ten. First, Claudia Black (who plays Vala Mal Doran) is added to the regular cast. That's not only good because she's a talented actress, but also because the character opens up a lot of doors for the writers. She can say and do and believe things that the other main characters have been forbidden from; she can make mistakes, and be selfish, and deceptive. She can prize personal relationships above The Fate Of The World. That introduces a lot of new situations, as well as new opportunities for both drama and humour. Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) has said in interviews that working with Claudia rekindled his passion for Stargate, and I think that definitely shows in his scenes with her; his character becomes much more interesting to watch.

The second good thing to happen is that, with the way the Ori plot line has evolved, and with the end of the series approaching, the story is being driven by something with urgency and topical relevance, giving it a lot more energy.

The season also features Stargate’s 200th episode (titled "200"). Although I’ve hated most of the show's attempts at humorous, self-ware episodes in the past, I loved "200." And, although I've hated most of Stargate's cliff-hanger season finales in the past, I loved the series ender "Unending" because of the time it took to explore the characters.

Some of the episodes are still hit and miss, but, in general, the final season of Stargate is extremely satisfying, displaying higher levels of organisation, better-integrated character development, and more complex ethical questions than in previous seasons. There's more energy, and fresher content than ever, and it's a very strong way for the series to end.
