Stanley Kubrick's daring last film is a bracing psychosexual journey, a riveting suspense tale and a career milestone for stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Cruise plays a doctor who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage - and may ensnare him in a murder mystery - after his wife's (Kidman) admission of sexual longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. Graceful tracking shots, rich colors, startling images: bravura traits that make Kubrick a filmmaker for the ages are here to keep everyone's eyes wide open.

Goddamn, there's a lot going on in this film. I usually don't really care for Nicole Kidman, but she's probably the best part of this movie. That bedroom scene is a masterpiece. Also, the use of colour throughout the entire movie is pretty amazing. I was re-watching this movie while trying to keep myself up on very little sleep, and the level of irrational horror I felt during the masked orgy sequence can only be rivaled by scenes from Kubrick's The Shining. Those masks freak me out, man.

The wondrous Stanley Kubrick directs this exceedingly sexual tome on love and jealously and seven year itches. Tom Cruise stars as Dr. Bill Harford, a man seemingly happily married to Alice (Nicole Kidman). But when Alice admits to a near affair, Dr. Harford embarks on a fantastical odyssey over two nights that nearly derails his marriage. Kubrick does what he does so well, giving us his unique immediacy and grandeur as Dr. Harford journeys first to a deathbed then onto a costumier and finally into a mansion-cum-sex-den straight out of the mind of the Pet Shop Boys. While Cruise is his usual stoic self throughout; Kidman seems out of her depth (despite her nudity) and is just plain awful, most especially in both her drunken and sexual scenes; which is odd as she was married at the time to Tom Cruise. In a fashion Eyes Wide Shut is the story of a frosh year student trying to lose his virginity taken far, far out into inner space. Sadly Kubrick passed away prior to the film's premiere in July 1999 but it remains a gorgeous, deep and luscious examination of one man's journey back to home. Kubrick considered it his best work to date and considering his filmography that's quite a testament.

Kubrick at less than his best is still GREAT! - TheShamus

Stanley Kubrick is the legendary driector behind films such as, "2001: A Space Oddessy", "The Shining", "Dr. Strangelove", "Clockwork Orange" and the list goes on. This was the last Stanley Kubrick directed film ... and there are lots of things which make it unique.

The movie runs past 2.5 hours in duration. The stars, "Tom Cruise" and "Nicole Kidman" ... some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, show nudity and sexual depictions which were enough to force the distributers to use computer graphics to "hide" certain graphic sexual acts. Even then, five minutes was cut from the North American version (this version) of the movie ... because you know North American audiences can not handle naked bodies and sexual situations.

This is not a traditional Hollywood movie ... so if you like your steam romance dumb and predictable, you will want something more like, "9 1/2 Weeks" (nothing personal against that movie). This is a movie which challenges the viewer to think about what holds them in their marriage ... why they don't cheat on their spouse ... it is about the nature of desire. It is about the difference between a man and a woman.

As you can predict, the cinematography is amazing. The symbols and sexual imagery are there ... and the film is worth another viewing to spot it all. Kubrick is a master film-maker.

The movie does run a little slower than your typical modern faire ... and you might wish there was about 30 minutes editted out. Others will find this sexual, interesting, and intelligent.

If you like sexual acts left to the imagination, this may not be your movie. It's a movie about sexuality -- so there is necessarily nudity and sexual situations.

It's not for everyone ... but fans will not be disappointed.
