Sidney Lumet's riveting courtroom drama earned five Oscar® nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Newman's towering performance as a down-and-out alcoholic attorney who stumbles onto one last chance to redeem himself. When attorney Frank Calvin (Newman) is given an open-and-shut medical malpractice case that no one thinks he can win, he courageously decides to refuse a settlement from the hospital. Instead he takes the case, and the entire legal system, to court.

My Favourite Newman Movie - c4th

This is my favourite Paul Newman movie (although I have not seen Road to Predition). He plays Frank Galvin, an alcoholic attorney with a rundown practice. His life-long friend throws him a nuisance suit that can make him enough money to keep him going for a while. In a moment of optimism and righteousness and against the strong advice of his friend, Galvin decides taking the case to trial is an opportunity for personal redemption. The title not only refers to the outcome of the case but also to his own future.

The plot takes you through waves of triumph and defeat as one man takes on a team of ruthless defence attorneys led by Ed Concannon (James Mason). The testimony of a key witness and the passionate and introspective delivery of Galvin’s final argument provide pivotal moments. Portions are a bit slow and brooding but you’ll find yourself shifting in your seat from anticipation each time the tide of the case turns.

I thought some romantic exchanges between Newman and Rampling a little awkward and lacking in chemistry, but on the whole, direction and acting was exceptional. Mason turned in a strong performance and was nominated for an Oscar. The film received five major nominations in total but came away with none. Newman, The Verdict, and its director, Sidney Lumet, all lost to the epic Gandhi.

"The Verdict" has to be one of the best courtroom dramas since "Twelve Angry Men". An alcoholic lawyer takes an open and shut case involving a malpractice. At first looking for a cash settlement, he soon sees this as the last chance for redemption and takes this case to court.

Had a lesser actor took the role of down and out lawyer Frank Galvin, it would have been two hours of chewing scenery. This role is certainly different from the cocky characters of Butch Cassidy and Hud. Paul Newman goes for Subtle, the quiet scenes are the ones that get to you. you feel sympathy for him each time he reaches for his eyedrops in order to get through the day.

Paul Newman's finest moment is a moment of revelation. Frank goes to the malpractice patient in order to take pictures for the settlement. Immediatly, he realizes that there is more to this case than just a settlement. this realization is expressed through the face with complete clarity.

An Excellent Film For Those Who Care to Care - MacAskill

It's an excellent film, but not a zippy movie. I know some people find it slow compared to the hyper-active dramas that folks seem to need to hold their attention.

But this is a powerful movie, if you can simply watch the guy - the lawyer (Newman) - try and pull his frayed life together for something more than himself. Not that he's being noble: the character is evolves by seeing that the world is ever so slightly larger than that which we can see or can know.

I think it's terrific, and still packs a powerful punch 25 years (?) after it came out. Written by David Mamet, it doesn't have Mamet's stylized dialogued, but has every bit of his characters' ferocity. A classic.
