Stargate Atlantis: Season 5

In this action-packed fifth season sparks fly when Woolsey becomes the new leader of the Atlantis team. Meanwhile, McKay faces difficult personal challenges; Teyla must balance her roles as mother and warrior; Ronan's past returns with a vengeance, and Keller finds peril, then help, from an unlikely source. Too bad this is the final season of Atlantis. This is a great series and rivals the original Stargate series. They killed off a number of main characters and even brought one back from the dead. The actors all worked very well together and I hope they put out a lost episodes disc because I watched the series when it first came out and there are a few missing in this series from each season WHY???

Disjointed? - Newgrange

I have been a fan of this series since it came out, but I have to be honest - I'm not really impressed with Season 5 so far. I understand that since Rachel Lutrell got pregnant, they had to write something new and improvised into the stories, but it's like they just kept improvising after that. The first four episodes on this disk all have the same quality of cut and jump story. I think the writers were the same, and the dialogue does appear to be fine, but the scenes are all over the place, and cut conveniently to the desired results. Even Wolsey as new head of Atlantis doesn't have any personality conflicts yet - he doesn't start out as his usual, ass-like bureaucratic self, he just shows up and POOF, he's a decent human being. Realistically, that should have taken the entire season, or at least a good part of it to achieve. But instead, like the rest of these first four episodes, we just fast-forward straight to what we want to see happen, instead of getting to SEE it happen. Time will tell what the rest of the season will bring. After watching disk 3, I feel better about the series - the first episode on this disk still suffered from the same problem, but the other three were more up to the standards set by the show in the first four years. Looking forward to the last 2 disks!

"The Shrine," written by Brad Wright, is the best episode of all five seasons. It may echo "Flowers for Algernon," but it gives David Hewlett full rein and he delivers one of the best performances on television. Five years of backstory makes for an incredibly rich texture in this episode. Martin Gero's "Brain Storm" is another topnotch effort--the really good episodes always centre on Rodney McKay. There are a few clunkers, but this season continues to be eminently watchable.
