King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane) rules the kingdom of Gilboa with steely determination unmatched by any rival. During a tense battle with the neighboring nation of Gath, David Shepherd (Chris Egan), an idealistic young soldier from the countryside, heroically crosses over dangerous enemy lines and rescues a coveted prisoner of war - the son of the king. Now, the lives of David and the King will be powerfully intertwined as greed, war, romance, forbidden love and secret alliances threaten to tear apart the kingdom.

I watched all three disks. I was drawn in by the premise which drew heavily from the Bible (the story of King David and King Saul) as well as Shakespeare, but set in modern day and with a monarchy which looked and felt like the British Monarchy, yet was completely different. Things familiar and yet uniquely different, I found it more like watching a parallel universe fiction of what could have been if only.. The plotline contained modern issues such as dealing with the press and living in the spotlight, cel phones and modern warfare, special ops, assassination and the king's own son and his struggles with being a homosexual.. to the old world flavor of dungeons with the supposedly dead deposed ruler in exile, intrigues at court and mistresses.. to interesting spiritual aspects from visions to very real signs .. all of which made enough plot twists and turns that I found the whole enjoyable to watch. It was less like a resolution at the end and more like the end of a first season.. with many plotlines set to go into action if the series had continued. Entertaining to watch, well acted, interesting plotlines and I kept comparing it to the other plotlines like it from the Bible and other movies with similar genres to them in order to see if I could guess how it would go. It kept me pleasantly suprised, I must say. If there had been a second season, I would have been zipping it. I felt it should have done something different with the plotline by the "end", but then at the end it hadn't yet completed that expectation, so if was a bit disappointing. It is not exactly leaving on a cliffhanger note, but certainly it has a lot to resolve left undone. I think this is likely a cancelled show, rather than an intentional ending with a finale. At least, that is what it felt like to me. Other than that, it was entertaining and worth zipping.

Politics, ambition, and a grunt soldier caught in the double-plays and intrigues of his king's court... I was expecting something with a new flavour despite the familiarity of the subject, but I didn't find any except for the fictional countries and the butterfly thing.

I didn't even get through the end of the first disk... It was just too boring, the characters lacking charisma as much as the story was short on punch.
