It's hellish work.

Ordinary People doing an Impossible Job - Myself

As a general TV series, Southland is commendable; good script, multiple themes, fast-paced but coherent story-telling; a cast of generally "ordinary" people (refreshingly not overly Hollywood-ish); serveral lead characters, which keeps the interest level high; a capable female lead; a male lead who is "broken" but sympathetic; depictions of dysfunctional relationships that have some "air time" but not enough to become soap-opera-ish.

As a "cop" series, it tells the story of police work that leaves the question screaming in our minds: "Who would want to do this job?". But, also leaves us with much respect for those who do, despite their personal shortcomings. It also makes clear the importance, but difficulty, of "drawing the line" somewhere; the lines between "right and wrong" are always blurred, but we've got to "take a stand", often much earlier than we do.

Original cop/drama show! - YPlovesmovies

I absolutely fell in love with this show after the first episode. I am a fan of other, "mainstream" cop/crime drama shows on tv, but this one really stands out from the rest! What is great about it is not just an amazing cast,but the story lines of each episode that let us in on the private, and often depressing and despaired lives, of each and every cop. It shows their personal lives as well as professional. Regina King is STELLAR in this! My favorite of all cast members! I recommend this to anyone who's looking for a more raw, real portrayal of criminals and criminal life, especially in a city like L.A. This show does not sugar coat it, soem scenes are often very disturbing, and I likd how it almost feels like a documentary at times..VERY good show!

influence of The Wire - mollym

It's interesting to me to see how a network show, from the stable of the ultra-respectable John Wells, has benefited from the room that The Wire created. The stories are still a little too neat, and the criminals, so far anyway, are very much The Other, but they are definitely influenced by the depth and subtlety of The Wire (and also, I thought, a little bit by Mike Davis, a Marxist who writes a lot about policing and gangs in LA).
