Four-time Primetime Emmy winner Edie Falco stars as Jackie Peyton, a quick-witted and deeply flawed emergency room nurse with more than a few secrets. For Jackie, every day is a high-wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and her own indiscretions. In the second season of this Primetime Emmy-winning series, Jackie struggles to keep up as a functioning addict, a loving wife and mother, and a first-class nurse.

Good show. A drug-addicted nurse struggles to find a balance between the demands of her frenetic job at a New York City hospital and an array of personal dramas. Zoey, another nurse, adds a bit of humour to the show. Jackie is a genius at what she does, but she's also a deeply troubled woman, with looming shadows of prescription drug addiction and her lapsed Catholic faith always appearing in the background.

Cynical, dark, touching and hilarious - BabyCatcher

As a nurse, this series speaks right to my heart (while also horrifying me a little). Nurse Jackie takes ethics seriously - though they are very much her own version of ethics. It's not uncommon for her to take matters into her own hands through the series (e.g. signing organ donor cards in the first season). She constantly challenges institutional hierarchy and oversteps her professional boundaries by acting in the role of an MD on occasion. Her personal life is rife with complexities which render her lovable and hated from one deceptive moment to the next. It's a roller coaster - but so is the profession. Being privy to the most intimate human suffering and injustice on a daily basis while being invited to offer healing and alternatives to patients with complex lives -- she does this in her own creative way from one scene to the next.

Season 2 has a slight dip in drama and a slight uptick in the comedy. There's been some minor tweaking of the show. NJ has taken a step backwards and a few characters have taken a step forward. Last season, Dr. O'hara was NJ's trusty wing-man and sounding board; her story line has evolved to such a point that now she's my favorite character.

Of course, props to the sublime Edie Falco. At times, a crack will appear in her serene facade and the strain will momentarily flash. Although they've dialed back her overt nastiness and sticky fingers this season; her willful blindness remains. She has a cheat sheet of the new pill dispenser and doesn't hesitate a second in betraying and implicating the entire nursing staff in her crimes. There's the hint of great tragedy in her future if she chooses her lifestyle over her wonderful life.

Minor complaints? They've opted to put the main dramatic thrust of the story on a back burner; but if feels a little timorous on their part, as if they don't quite trust that NJ could withstand the slings and arrows of truth. But they definitely need a quicken the pace a little: the 25 minute the run time imposes serious time restrictions and the 12 episode season feels kind of light.

There's some continuity problems: Last year's cliffhanger ending where she OD'd on a hospital floor has been simply forgotten. Dr. O'hara's dramatic transformation was explained away and she quietly returned to her blissful and stylish self. The major set-ups for the plot twists become for the most part, merely teases.

Nurses tend to have have highly developed observational skill sets, trained to notice reactions and symptoms. Gossip travels quickly when it comes to juicy dish in the ward, but no one notices a junkie in their midst. The producers don't seem to realize this is seriously beginning to undermine the dramatic credibility of the series and the longer it continues, the weaker it becomes.
