The King's Speech
Find your voice.
When England's throne is suddenly thrust upon him, amidst royal family scandal and impending world war, King George VI (Colin Firth, Oscar nominee, Best Actor) must overcome a lifelong, debilitating speech impediment to lead his nation. After his iron-willed, compassionate wife Elizabeth (Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter) secretly enlists an eccentric speech therapist (Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush), the two men forge an unlikely friendship that will ultimately empower the monarch to find his voice, inspire his people and rally the world. Based on an inspiring true story,
The King's Speech
has been universally hailed as "a masterpiece. The majestic cast is overwhelming" (
The New York Observer
).

This is a fantastic movie. Not only are you watching someone with a stammer trying to get rid of it; you are also seeing someone claim his "voice". Albert (George) was not raised to be King but in order to be a king during war-time, he needed to speak to his country with his voice. Very inspiring.

I love Colin Firth, and this movie is a good example of why. He is an extremely talented and sensitive actor and deserves an Oscar for his performance in this film. His depiction of a real man with a real issue that impacts his character to the core is something to watch. This would have been a good movie even if it wasn’t based on a real person and that real person wasn’t the king. Definitely one to watch.
Deserving of Four Major Oscars

Many excellent drama films have been based on a simple historical factoid. Such is the case with The King’s Speech. King George VI had a stammer and recruited a speech therapist to prepare him for his many speeches broadcast on radio. David Seidler’s awarded screenplay tells the story of both tribulations and bonding that grew between Lionel Rogue and the Royal Couple during this arrangement spanning World War II.
The character driven movie allows viewers to see the royal as a man with his frailties exposed. Colin Firth delivers an Oscar-winning performance to convey the feelings of doubt and vulnerability experienced by a King frustrated by his impediment but still driven to lead a commonwealth through a period of conflict. Geoffrey Rush plays Lionel Rogue, the Australian therapist, who balances psychology, compassion, and practicality as he teaches King George VI to manage his stammer and overcome his limited ability to speak to the public.
This humorous and heart-warming drama is definitely deserving of its four major Oscar awards including the Best Picture of 2010.
