25th Hour
"One of the year's most explosive films." -Clay Smith, Access Hollywood
Academy Award nominee Edward Norton heads an amazing all-star cast in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee (
Summer of Sam, Do the Right Thing
) film
25th Hour
. In 24 short hours Monty Brogan (Norton) goes to prison for seven long years. Once a king of Manhattan, Monty is about to say goodbye to the life he knew-a life that opened doors to New York's swankiest clubs but also alienated him from the people closest to him. In his last day on the outside, Monty tries to reconnect with his father (Brian Cox,
The Bourne Identity
), and gets together with two old friends, Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman,
Almost Famous
) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper,
The Green Mile
). And then there's his girlfriend, Naturelle (Rosario Dawson,
Men In Black II
), who might (or might not) have been the one who tipped off the cops. Monty's not sure of much these days, but with time running out, there are choices to be made as he struggles to redeem himself in the
25th Hour
.

I have not read the book and so I can't fully judge this as an adaptation but something is not working here. For one thing, the film (like a number of Lee's films) is over-scored. There are a number of Hollywood Music Climaxes throughout the film which make you go "what???" because nothing is happening. I have a really hard time getting the relationship between the three friends, especially between Hoffman and Norton, who really don't seem to like each other or anything like that. The pacing is also really strange. And there's a moment which is basically a poetry reading, and another section seemingly also adapted straight from the book with not all that much thought as to how it works visually (it doesn't). I can't quite put my finger on what else about it doesn't work, but it just doesn't feel right.
Good Story, Odd Timing

This story about a criminal with a heart of gold facing his punishment starts out poignant. He seems to be turning over a new leaf, but the audience can't be sure, since the DEA searches his apartment and uncovers evidence before he ever has a chance to actually change his ways. There's the mystery of who turned him in, but in the end it doesn't matter, since his fate is sealed. As much as the audience roots for Norton's character, they know he's paying for crimes he committed, and that his sentence is not unjust. It's interesting to watch the effect of his sentence on his friends and family, who seem more affected than him. While Norton's character accepts his fate, his girlfriend and father can't, and his friends are angry.
The story was compelling, and the first half was wonderful to watch, but the rest seemed dragged out in parts. For every whirlwind scene that captured attention and emotions, there was another scene that was longer, and less interesting. Maybe some of the tertiary characters were underdeveloped.
Overall, a good movie, and great acting, but not Norton's best.

Norton, Hoffman and Pepper are great together. Each of these three is flawed in their own way. Norton’s story is the most obvious – he’s a drug dealer who has been caught and is about to go to jail. At the start of the film Norton is setup as the likeable, “bad guy”. As the movie progresses though it is interesting seeing Pepper and Hoffman’s stories set against Norton’s. One’s a successful trader the other a high school teacher. On the surface they both seem like they have taken a successful path in life compared to Ed Norton. As the movie develops Spike Lee does a fantastic job of exploring each of the characters flaws so that by the of the movie I was questioning whether any of the characters was as good, bad or successful as they first appeared.
