Believing his political career is over, Senator Jay Bulworth (Warren Beatty) takes out an enormous insurance policy--and a contract on his own life. But his impending death fills him with an outrageous desire to break the rules and tell it like it is. Suddenly the Senator is the surprise political favorite and falls hopelessly in love with Nina (Halle Berry), a beautiful, young activist form the inner city. Now that the Senator has found a new reason to live, he must also find the hit man who's out to kill him!

A brilliant and astounding black comedy.

I'd like to say that Bulworth is the best political satire in years, but the truth is that is has tough competition from Barry Levinson's corrosive Wag the Dog in that department. Both films succeed admirably, but, although each takes aim at the sorry state of current-day politics, they have slightly different agendas and approaches. Wag the Dog dissects the showmanship aspect of Washington, while simultaneously firing a few shots at Hollywood. Bulworth, on the other hand, is a full-frontal assault on the shallowness of the political campaign process. It has the audacity that Primary Colors should have displayed, but was afraid to. Bulworth is willing to openly offend to get its point across. That's something that Primary Colors was nervous about doing. Bulworth is unrepentantly cynical in its view that all politicians are in the back pockets of big business and that every elected official, whether Democrat or Republican, is a member of an exclusive club. Bulworth's only real weakness (and it's more in the nature of a minor inconvenience than a significant flaw) is the backstory, which, with its disguised hit men, car chases, and bungled assassination attempts, takes up a little too much time. The political satire, on the other hand, is brilliant. Not only is it honed to a viciously sharp edge, but it's frequently hilarious. Beatty manages to lampoon controversial issues, like kids selling drugs for dealers because they're too young to go to prison, while simultaneously making serious points. ulworth is an angry movie, but Beatty is savvy enough to recognize that people respond better to comedies than serious "issue films," so he has camouflaged his message beneath the surface of this original, incisive satire. Like Wag the Dog and Primary Colors, Bulworth may not have widespread mainstream appeal, but anyone with an interest in American politics should see this movie.

Bulworth is a film about a senator from California who is nearing the end of his career. After a long and fruitless campaign the senator, tired and hungry, gets up in front of the voters and starts telling it like it is. The people are shocked to hear plain, harsh truth from a politician and minor chaos follows. The senator goes missing, his aids aren't sure if he's using desperate tactics or if he's nuts and the media want answers.
Along the way Bulworth meets a lot of new people and gets introduced to life in the poor black neighbourhoods of his riding.
The film is primarily comedy, but contains quite a bit of message too about the state of politics, big business and media. It manages to mix the message with funny bits and tender moments well and makes for a pleasant, amusing film. My one complaint is that the film uses a lot of noise, usually in the form of people talking over each other and/or repeating things. It makes for an intense effect, but I feel it is overused.
A solid, if sometimes silly film, that has an outstanding cast.

I saw "Bulworth" in an almost empty movie theatre in june 1998. Maybe it was just as well as I was grinning from ear to ear at times laughing very loudly. All I knew was that I was having a great time and "Bulworth" was achieving something great.
It Took actor/writer/producer/director Warren Beatty the better part of the 90's to get "Bulworth" made. It took many fights with studio heads and had many obstacles. Filmed in 96' "Bulworth" languished on Fox's studio shelf until it's realease in spring 1998. It was perfect timing. Obviously the filmaker's were expecting a Bob Dole victory in the 96' presidential election. The movie is a stinging, brazen satire of politics and big corperations.
Beatty plays Senator Jay Billington Bulworth in the final days of the 96 primaries. Bulworth is at a crises point. Fed up with the way he sees himself he arranges hit on himself. Chasing down death Bulworth lets loose and tells it how it is. Discovering the truth really does set one free he emerges a chargerd, no holds-barred motormouth exposing politicians and business CEO's as the greedy bottom feeders they are. Realising there is truth in Rap Bulworth becomes the rapping politician exposing what's wrong with the country and who's to blame. With a razor sharp script (with help from Aaron Sorkin and James Toback) "Bulworth" is "Network" for the 90's. Everyone is in top form in this film. Beatty is more alive here than he has been since the 70's. Halle Berry is true sass in this movie and she delivers the movie's most devestating message. Also great are Jack Warden, Oliver Platt and Don Cheadle. The Cinematography by Vittorio Storrao is breathtaking. Pay attention to his color schemes. The great Ennio Morricone provides a tender melodic score interspersed with hip-hop tracks from Nas, ODB, RZA, Method Man, Dr. Dre and Public Enemy. "Bulworth" is a brainy, gutsy, hiliarious comedy that packs a punch.
