Cabaret
"A great movie musical, made, miraculously, without compromises." -Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to
Cabaret
. The winner of eight Academy Awards, it boasts a score by the legendary songwriting partnership behind another film that would energize the movie musical genre with equal razzle-dazzle 30 years later:
Chicago
's John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Inside the Kit Kat Club of 1931 Berlin, starry-eyed singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and an impish emcee (Joel Grey) sound the clarion call to decadent fun, while outside a certain political party grows into a brutal force.
Cabaret
caught lightning )and won Oscars) for Minnelli, Grey and director Bob Fosse, who shaped a triumph of style and substance. Come to this
Cabaret
, old chum. You'll never want to leave.

This movie could have been made yesterday. It is timeless, perfect.
This movie is a precious record of some of the greatest talents ever: Bob Fosse, Lisa Minnelli and Joel Grey. Fosse has already left us, Lisa ain't the girl she was, and even Joel is doing bits on Law and Order these days - but this movie brings them all back when they were maybe better than they ever were, before or since.
The story brings a remarkable blend of innocence in an age of decadence on the threshold of a period of true horror - and all in song and dance!
There's lots of great songs - but "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" really compresses the whole movie and its time into one stunning package.
If you have not seen this movie - see it! If you haven't seen it in a while, see it again!
forget Chicago, come to the Cabaret

I loved this in 1972 and I love it now. Minelli was terrific, sadly I think it was her finest hour, though, and she got unstuck in the part. Joel Gray is wonderful, so much energy and naughty wit, just bursting from his over-the-top performance. Very worthy of all 8 Academy Awards, in my opinion. Fosse did great in all respects! Cabaret was just like this in Germany before the war - naughty, opinionated, edgy, satirical, fresh, renewed almost nightly, a real narrative on what was going on in town and in Germany. The song where the Nazi Youth sings Tomorrow belongs to Me is just chilling, and just brilliant. As are virtually all the scenes in this film. I'm so glad I saw it again. I wish it would come back to the big cinema screens, I'd like to see it Big again. In my opinon it is a hundred times better than Chicago, by the way.
Life IS a cabaret, and cabaret is life. Both go by fast, in scenes that will rip your heart out. Both are unendurable and impossible to not be involved with.

FilmJunkie
A dark twisted musical about a cabaret singer in Nazi Germany.
This film deals with the ambiguity of both sexuality and political affiliation under the guise of a nightclub act.
No one directs films like Bob Fosse. His dark, almost gothic, style is timeless, as we have seen in the new 'Chicago' both on Broadway and on screen.
Liza Minnelli kills her role as Sally Bowles. She is all wide-eyed innocence tempered with an alcoholic self-abuse streak. Michael York is the perfect counterpoint as the straight-laced bisexual paramour of both Sally and a few lads.
The centrepiece of the film is Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies. He keeps the film from lagging and plays his role with life and, yes, decadance that few others could pull off. He is both highly sexual and androgynous all at once, a classic performance.
Oh and the music. My favorite is 'Maybe This Time', but you have 'Money, Money', 'Two Ladies', and of course the classic title track.
One of the most unique and awesome musicals ever made.
