Cadfael: Monk's Hood
Murder and mystery in darkest medieval England
Brother Cadfael's secular past collides with his cloistered present in this story about possession and love. When a wealthy landowner decides to disinherit his stepson, Shrewsbury Abbey stands to benefit. But before Gervase Bonel can make the transfer final, he is poisoned by food prepared in the abbey. The dead man's widow is Cadfael's own childhood sweetheart, whom he last saw 40 years before when he left for the Crusades, promising he would be back to marry her.

Cadfael at his mystery solving best!

Lady_Olwen
A man, dissatisfied with his step-sons life choices, decides to leave his manor to Shrewsbury Abbey. When the man ends up poisoned after eating food sent from the abbey, the step-son becomes the prime suspect in the murder. Cadfael doubts the quick assumption, sets out to find the actions and motives behind the crime, and in the process may help to redeem himself for a promise long unfulfilled.
The true jewel in this series is Derek Jacobi, who has an uncanny ability to disappear into his roles and still remain utterly entertaining. He is considered on of the best actors alive today & it is easy to see why. His performance as the mystery solving Benedictine monk is worth the price of admission. Add to that great costumes, excellent set design and good supporting cast & you have a series that is worth the investment.
This is without a doubt one of the superior episodes of the series. An excellent script, that has great suspects & motives – you won’t know who the murderer is until the very end. A fantastic supporting cast (e.g. Sean Pertwee, Jonny Lee Miller, Julian Firth & Michael Culver) also helps to elevate this episode.

SNAPSHOT: Charming period mystery films delightfully placed amidst normally bleak 12th Century England. Even paced. Heart-warming performances by Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael. I liked them all. I am rated these individually as either GOOD, BETTER or BEST.
MORE THOUGHTS: These films take place in the 1300's near, around, or about a monk, Brother Cadfael, who comes late to religious life after a life as hardened adventurer. Cadfael brings his charming and sometimes tough-guy persona to bear against a series of crimes and criminals. Start with a BETTER category ZIP choice and if you like 'em you'll find yourself drawn back to them one after the other when your ZIP List sags a little.
