Canadian Bacon
"Surrender pronto, or...we'll level Toronto!"
Writer/director Michael Moore (
Roger and Me
) serves up a "delightfully ludicrous" (
Sight and Sound
) political send-up brimming with madcap hilarity and side-splitting slapstick! Starring legendary funnyman John Candy, as well as Rhea Perlman, Alan Alda, Kevin Pollak, Rip Torn and Steven Wright,
Canadian Bacon
is one "funny, acidic satire" (
Variety
)!
Faced with sagging approval ratings and disgruntled arms manufacturers, the U.S. President (Alda) decides to cook up a new Cold War... with Canada! And after a flood of media propaganda, Americans waste no time in "patriotically" burning their ice skates and swearing off maple syrup. But when bumbling U.S. sheriff Boomer (Candy) and his hair-trigger deputy Honey (Perlman) decide to take matters into their own hands and lead a preemptive strike, they soon find themselves embroiled in a hilarious international incident that's too close for comfort, eh!

Are any of these true? Michael Moore finds all the American and Canadian stereotype she can and puts them together in a giant heap called Canadian bacon. The jokes come fast and most end up bein funny; with comedically-talented actors like in this movie, how can they not? Bitingly satirical (thanks to a good script) and with decent music and even cinematography, it's definitely one movie I'm glad I saw.

first, i would like to piont out that in the movies description, it says that the presidant, played by alan alda, drives some incesed canadians to take matters into their own hands. this is incorrect. they are all americans. they believe wholeheartedly what the presient has put into the media about canada and decide to invade it themselves. this is funny because they are all played by canadians. all steryotypes of canada and its people are shown in this movie and they are hilarious. 5 stars

Alan Alda plays an American President whose popularity is plummetting. What to do about it? In this very funny satire, the answer is to create an enemy to whip up US public opinion in support of the start of a new Cold War. But who will it be against? The Russians are no threat anymore. Well, the obvious choice is Canada! After all, Canada has massed 90% of its population along the border (they must be up to something!) and the Toronto Blue Jays have won the World Series - twice (and they cheated to do it!) So, "Operation Canadian Bacon" is launched!
This is a great satire that pokes fun at pretty much everything and anything. John Candy was brilliant as Niagara County (NY) sheriff Bud Boomer, who gets so caught up in the anti-Canadians spirit that he takes it upon himself to lead an invasion. Unfortunately, he loses one of his comrades (Honey, played by Rhea Pearlman) who gets arrested in Niagara Falls, Ont. - for littering! The White House sends in troops to resuce her (and Bud goes too) and the whole thing spirals into a very "serious" international incident, during which Russia almost gets nuked by accident! Candy was perfect as the ugly American - loud, crude and totally ignorant of anything outside his own immediate circle (and pretty ignorant within that circle!) Pearlman and Alda were also quite good, and I enjoyed Bill Nunn as Deputy Kabral, another of Boomer's gang, who gripes about being determined to make Canadians "white." There was really no significant Canadian character in the movie, but a brilliant caricature by Dan Aykroyd as an Ontario police officer who pulls Boomer over while he's on his way to rescue Honey in Toronto to insist that the anti-Canadian slogans painted on his truck be translated into French.
This is humorous throughout and completely enjoyable - far more entertaining (and effective) than the quasi-documentaries Michael Moore is now more famous for. There's also a fun send-up of US television news.
