Get Set for some Down and Dirty Fun!

Everybody is cleaning up and getting down in this classic comedy-the first "disco slacker" movie from the decade that brought you the tube top, the polyester suit and lots of good times. It's just a typical day in the lives of the employees, customers and passersby of a Los Angeles car wash-but what a day! There's a would-be robbery...an assembly line of the weirdest, baddest, shadiest characters you've ever met...and lots of booty-bumping music to pass the hours till quitting time. Featuring outrageously hilarious performances by George Carlin, "Professor" Irwin Corey, the Pointer Sisters, and Richard Pryor as Daddy Rich, a flamboyant Reverend who preaches the goodness of the dollar, Car Wash is a timeless classic celebrating an era devoted to living life in the fast lane.

Doesn't Hold Up As Well - newdaysof

Seeing this movie again after all these years was a little dissappointing. The characters and plot are just a wee bit shallow and dated.

George Carlin's taxi-driver character is too simplistic and never really gets developed. Richard Pryor's Mr. Rich character is silly and unbelievable.

The various car wash characters are mildly interesting but the slapstick comedy is overused and tired. There are a couple of memorable disco songs on the soundtrack, but they keep getting repeated throughout the movie.

And I may be mistaken, but I believe some scenes have been cut from the original movie. I'm pretty sure there is supposed to be a scene with an Indian Chief getting out of his car and getting a car wash, (the song Carwash has the line "Even An Indian Chief", and I remember there being a brief scene in the original movie), but it seems to be cut. What other scenes may have been cut?

Overall, it still has some nostalgia value and is might be a good warm-up film before watching another 70's classic film like Shaft or Hair.

How could you not love this movie?!?!

The collection of characters, (family no less) at this well oiled, slightly screwed up place of business is just too funny. They all have their own unique issues yet everybody pulls together to get the job done and in the end it all works out.

Richard Pryor is classic with his preachers role and unfortuantely they should have given George Carlin a bigger speaking role.

This movie breaks back all the memories of the 70's including the classic soundtrack.

Car Wash is your typical Day-in-the-life type of movie. But what a day it was! It reminds me of my years in L.A., although I frequent the do it yourself car washes. The cast was great, the music was even greater, played always in the background as it should. It's got it's funny moments, and T.C.'s afro was bigger than himself! A great movie for those up for a day at the car wash.
