Everyone has a wild side. Even a legend.

Chpalin is a loving, grand scal portrait of the Little Tramp's amazing life and times. His poverty-stricken childhood in England comes to life, along with his friendships with Mack Sennet and Douglas Fairbanks, his many wives and scandelous affairs, and his relentless pursuit by J. Edgar Hoover. Chaplin is the larger-than-life story of the actor behind the icon and a stunning depiction of a bygone era when Hollywood was at its most glamorous.

The Great Dictator opened my eyes to Charlie Chaplin who I had sterotyped as a comedy stricken pony. But low and behold like shrek say's "He's an onion with many different layers".

Chaplin is so close to perfection and a 5 star rating, but falls short due to a weak ending and a drawn out narrative storyline. Than again you can't edit 1's life... even if it's Hollywoods greatest entertainer to EVER live!

Most biographical films disapoint but Charles Chaplin wrote his Bio Novel during the last 10 years of his retirement after being exiled from the USA (thanks to Edgar Hoover) He had time to reflect on the success, the struggles and flaws of his disfunctional youth, his mentally ill mother, and serial relationships plus bad career moves. For me, everything Chaplin does speaks to me through his comedy, as he makes people laugh. Deep down inside he was emotionally scarred and struggling to get by in life. It becomes clear within the first 10 minutes of the film Chaplin is destined for greatness. Without giving out the entire film I can say without a sense of irony this is the best Chaplin film, his life was more entertaining than the tramp.

Once in a while an actor playing the role of a well known person, would inhabit not just the mannerism, but the soul of that person. Some such examples are, I think, Kinsley as Ghandi, Voight as Pope John Paul II, Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. Robert Downey Jr., in his portrayal as comic genius Charlie Chaplin, has surely joined this distinguished company.

There is a sadness in the face of Downey that pervades the entire movie, even in moments of Chaplin's greatest triumphs. It reminds us of "Smile", the song written by Chaplin that begins with the words "Smile when your heart is breaking."

From his humble beginnings, with a mother who had mental problems, to his great success in Hollywood(land), to the scandal that let to his exile in Switzlerland, Chaplin's life was one, in spite of his successes, of many dark valleys.

It reminds me once again that the life of a performer, in the high art as well as in popular culture, is really a sad one, so dependent upon the whim of a fickle public, the critics, and the press.

Promising But Fails To Satisfy In The End - revsdd

An interesting enough look at the life of one of the best comedians ever - Charlie Chaplin. Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in the title role was superb. He so dominated the film that all others faded into insignificance. Not that there weren't other good performances. I thought that Dan Aykroyd in particular was quite convincing as Mack Sennett, Chaplin's first producer who gave him his break into moving pictures. But Downey dominated. Anthony Hopkins' role as George Hayden puzzled me. Hayden was the writer Chaplin had editing his autobiography, and the movie revolves around his reminiscences with Hayden, so it sounds as if this would be an important role, but to cast Hopkins was a waste of his talent. Hayden was important in pushing the story along, but the part consisted mainly of him asking Chaplin a question, and the movie then falling into a flashback of that part of Chaplin's life. Almost anyone could have played this role. It didn't even begin to stretch Hopkins' talents.

The movie itself whets the viewers' appetite for knowledge about this enigmatic character, but in the end doesn't do a satisfactory job of providing it. There are suggestions of the problems Chaplin had, but nothing is really fleshed out. Why his insatiable appetite for young (very young) women? We know he liked them, but there's no real exploration of the issue. And most disappointing to me was that there was no real effort put into Chaplin's blacklisting during the Red Scare after World War II. We discover that J. Edgar Hoover's animosity toward him went back a long way, and we get some film clips of the McCarthy hearings, but then we simply learn that Chaplin has been, in effect, exiled from the United States. There's no meat to the story. Eventually, it leads to Chaplin's reintroduction to America at the 1972 Academy Awards.

It's not a bad movie, and it gives a taste of Charlie Chaplin, but it doesn't do much to satisfy the viewers' hunger once it's whetted.
