Cowboy
A Man's Not A Man -- Until He's A Cowboy.
Tempers flare and fists fly in
Cowboy
, an action-packed sagebrush classic based on the real-life adventures of a young tenderfoot turned tough cattleman. Glenn Ford stars as Tom Reece, a range-hardened trail boss who has just arrived in Chicago after months on the plains. When he loses all his money in a high stakes poker game, he reluctantly accepts a $3,800 loan from hotel desk clerk Frank Harris (Academy Award® winner Jack Lemmon) in exchange for a piece of his cattle business. Frank, a would-be cowboy, has fallen hopelessly in love with Maria Vidal (Anna Kashfi), the voluptuous daughter of a wealthy Mexican rancher. T Though her father forbids the lovers from seeing each other again, Frank holds Tom to their partnership agreement, and forces the feisty wrangler to take him on the cattle drive to Maria's hometown of Guadalupe. There, the two men find all the excitement they can handle in this all-star Technicolor tale of fiery emotions and dangerous desires.

When you marry a man born in Texas, you learn to watch & actually enjoy cowboy movies. And when they star one of your own personal favourites - Jack Lemmon - you are even more inclined to enjoy the cowboy movie.
And I did. Not as much as the Texan maybe, but I did enjoy it.
The story itself was excellent, believable (which makes sense as it's based on a real story), and very well executed. Glenn Ford, one of moviedom's quintessential cowboys, did his usual excellent job but Jack Lemmon really surprised me. I mean, I know he's a good actor, and an excellent pianist, but a cowboy?
Yee haw!
Anyway, if you're feeling like beer & pretzels, and maybe a side of beef, sit down with this movie and enjoy.

This is a movie that was based on a true story. When Glenn Ford walks in to the hotel, you believe he is a rough and tumble cowboy who is a trail boss moving hundreds of heads of Texas longhorns north from Texas to Chicago. There, he gets involved with a precocious desk clerk, played by Jack Lemmon. The transition from clerk to cowboy, as portrayed by Lemmon, is nothing short of astounding. Allowing for Hollywood exaggerations, and if you buy the concept, the movie works well, as a western. I couldn't help but make comparisons with "Rawhide", the old t.v. series with Clint Eastwood, which covered the same material, more or less. I liked them both. Life on the trail was really hard, the movie shows that strainful existense well.
