Dancer In The Dark
In a world of shadows, she found the light of life.
Director Lars von Trier (
Breaking The Waves
) delivers a provocative mix of drama and musical theater in this acclaimed movie that won both the Palme d'Or for Best Picture and the Best Female Performance award (for lead actress Bjork) at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
Recording star Bjork is miraculous as Selma, a factory worker in rural America and single mother who is losing her eyesight from a hereditary disease. Determined to protect her 10-year-old son from the same fate, Selma is saving her money to get him an operation.
In the evenings, Selma escapes into a world where "nothing dreadful ever happens," rehearsing for a production of
The Sound of Music
with her best friend, Kathy (Catherine Deneuve, Academy Award nominee for
Indochine
). But when a neighbor (David Morse,
Proof of Life, The Green Mile, The Negotiator
) betrays her trust, Selma spirals out of control. The lines between reality and fantasy blur, and Selma begins to believe that her life has actually become a Hollywood musical - as she inexorably heads toward the film's unforgettable finale. Co-starring Joel Grey (Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor in
Cabaret
) and featuring original music by Bjork.

Super imagniative! The main protagonist is a young idealistic European woman who lives in 1960's America with delightful escapist tendenciies to musicals when her own life becomes unfair, harsh and heartbreaking. Also an effective European critique of the American legal system that is sometimes unfair, harsh and heartbreaking.

I actually saw this movie at the cinema and have never experienced being in a place where so many people were crying at once. It sorts of leaves you with a bit of a feeling that the world is a horrible place but the film is so beautifully done(in every aspect) that it really is a must-see. Bjork does a wonderful job and there are so many parts that actually feel like you are in Selma's mind. I am a man that hates the musical. Period. This is the exception to the rule.

Dancer in the Dark is a film that I both love and hate. I love it for its characters, its visual style, its music, and its boldness to cast Björk as the title character. I hate it for its emotionally manipulative turn and the feeling it left me with. Never in my whole life have I experienced a film that affected me so emotionally. Dancer in the Dark is powerful, frustrating, beautiful, and devastating. And it's for those reasons that I believe it's worth a watch.
Dancer in the Dark tells the story of Selma (Björk), a Czech immigrant living in America. Selma has a son, lives in a trailer, and works in a factory with her friend Kathy (Catherine Deneuve). She also has an admirer named Jeff (Peter Stormare) who follows her around and looks out for her. Selma is neighbours with Bill (David Morse) and Linda Houston (Cara Seymour). When Selma reveals to Bill that she's going blind, it sets off a chain of events that will change Selma's life forever.
Selma is a character who fantasizes when things get too hard. This segues into a number of delightful musical numbers that bring colour to Dancer in the Dark's very bleak world. The songs, much like Björk's music, are odd, beautiful, and well performed. Dancer in the Dark more of a musical drama than a dramatic musical.
I'm very critical of singers who decide to act. I made no exception with Björk. Although I didn't consider myself a Björk fan when I first saw Dancer in the Dark, I did know the soundtrack. Björk absolutely blew me away in her portrayal of Selma. She goes to emotional depths that I couldn't dream of going to. She plays Selma as sincere and genuine as a character needs to be in a movie like this. While the film has a number of great performances, including Catherine Deneuve, it's really Björk who stands out and shows the world just how talented she is.
Ultimately Dancer in the Dark is a frustrating movie to watch. It takes the viewer to many emotional places and ends on an extremely
