This is one of those monster movies that is way better than expected. The story although predictable is very good and the acting is also very good. Treat williams is excellent in his role as a no questions asked captain and when the crap hits the fan he backs down from nothing. The effects are amazing and even today look as real as anything out there. well worth the rental

Falls down in the second half due to impossible set of co-incidences - Superdave

The first half of the movie is a pretty tight little caper thriller as Treat Williams and his band of hi-tech raiders board a luxury yacht and dump a virus into its operating system to bypass the vault control. So far so good. Except the ship is infested with unbelievably huge and lethal seas creatures and by knocking out the ship's security protocols the raiders just let them loose all over the ship. Oops. If this seems like a very contrived way to flip the movie into a salty creature feature, it is. The plot contrivances by that point kill one's suspension of disbelief - there's just too much to disbelieve. What's more the second half of the movie is one long generic run-away-from-the-monster chase sequence already familiar from the Aliens series, not to mention Deep Blue Sea, Leviathan, Deep Star Six and every other watery creature feature of the last thirty years. I found myself bored during what should have been the biggest action payoff of the movie.

Way Too Much Gore - newdaysof

This was an excellent movie in many respects: interesting story, good actors and script, amazing special effects, non-stop action and suspense. But the thing that ruined it for me was the extremely excessive and horrific gore.

I don't mind being frightened a little, but the images of gore and extreme horror were way over the top and beyond. That seems to be the problem with most movies these days: they seem to be trying to outdo each other in the amount of horrific gore they can shock the audience with. Enough is enough. Just a small amount is sufficient to get the audience glued to the screen. Any more and I am forced to fast forward past all of it.

Treat Williams is one of my favourite actors and it was good to see him in the lead role.
