The robbery shold have taken 10 minutes. 4 hours later, the bank was like a circus sideshow. 8 hours later, it was the hottest thing on live TV. 12 hours later, it was all history. And it's all true.

On a hot Brooklyn afternoon, two optimistic losers set out to rob a bank. Sonny (Al Pacino) is the mastermind, Sal (John Cazale) is the follower, and disaster is the result. Because the cops, crowds, TV cameras and even the pizza man have arrived. The "well-planned" heist is now a circus.

Bizarre Hostage Situation Bizarrely Resolved - c4th

Dog Day Afternoon chronicles one of the most bizarre bank robbery and hostage situations you’ll ever see. It took place in Brooklyn in the early seventies. At several points, the movie looks like it’s going to diverge into a comedy but the seriousness of the ordeal always prevails. This is merely testament to just how crazy the whole incident and some of the involved characters actually were.

Al Pacino is outstanding as Sonny, a frustrated working man who cracks to the pressures of a life in which he strives to support and assist others. In a reactionary frame of mind, he decides to rob a bank. As the caper begins to fall apart, Sonny’s mood as a frantic fish out of water trying to control his predicament is deftly captured by Pacino. The true level of Sonny’s instability becomes apparent when he begins making outlandish demands and even more so when he obviously believes they are being met.

Pacino’s performance is reason enough to watch the movie. We also get an entertaining glimpse of applied psychology as we watch the manner in which police and FBI bring the episode to a conclusion - a conclusion which on the screen seems a bit abrupt and anticlimactic, just as it often is in real life.

An Inside Look At A Botched Bank Robbery - revsdd

Al Pacino puts on a brilliant performance here as Sonny Wortzik, a desperate man who tries to rob a bank - an attempt that just keeps going more and more wrong as each minute goes by. Apparently based on true events (with the real names having been changed) the movie provides a fascinating look at both the bungled bank job and Sonny's extremely complicated pesonal life. Divorced from his wife (with whom he had two children) Sonny had begun a relationship with a pre-operative transsexual (played by Chris Sarandon) who was becoming suicidal over notbeing able to afford a sex change operation. In partnership with Sal (John Cazale) Sonny robs the bank, but the police respond very quickly and Sonny ends up with a bankful of hostages. An interesting aside in the movie is watching how the various hostages handled the situation. The only real weakness I can see in this movie is that there's no explanation of who Sal was, or of how he was connected with Sonny. Sal provides a bit of humour to the movie. He comes across as completely lost, and begins to worry when he finds out that the media are reporting that the robbers are "two homosexuals." He wasn't a homosexual, and he wanted the world to know that! Charles Durning also put on a good performace as NYPD Detective Moretti, who's handling the robbery, and who comes across as a pretty decent guy who really wants to find a way out of this for everyone.

Essentially what we have here is a fascinating story complemented by excellent performances all around. It's a 9/10.

Al Pacino provides glimpses of the acting prowess that is to come in this real life tale of a bank robbery gone wrong in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the early 1970s.

Pacino once again teams with a couple of known quantities: John Cazale, who played Fredo Corleone, brother to Pacino's Michael Corleone, in the first two Godfather films (and posthumously in the third); and producer Martin Bregman, with whom Pacino worked on the cop drama Serpico in 1973. (Pacino would later work with Bregman again in such notable films as Scarface [1983], Carlito's Way [1993], and the Insider [1999]...and the two are scheduled to make Torch, a film set in the 1920s.)

In this film, we quickly learn that the bank heist was poorly planned when one of the three would-be robbers walks out on his friends before even one dollar is removed from the vault. From there, the robbery descends into chaos but we gain an understanding of the thieves through some clever scenes, including one where Sonny Wortzik (Pacino) leaves the bank to talk with a NYPD sergeant, played by Charles Durning.

Wortzik quickly realizes he's the centre of attention and begins to take full advantage of the situation.

Cazale is less impressive but doesn't get a lot screen time.

Director Sidney Lumet (Network) seems to know how to make the most of Pacino's talents. There are numerous closeups and he lets him off the leash on more than one occasion.

The film contains a few twists and is definitely worth the two hours, especially if you like Pacino. He's much more memorable here than in Serpico.
