Meet Bill Porter. A man of remarkable spirit. He'll touch your heart. He'll change your life.

Bill Porter knows he has little hope of landing a salesman job. To improve his prospects, he offers to take a sales territory nobody wants. It's nothing compared to what Bill faces every day. He has cerebral palsy.

William H. Macy portrays Bill, impaired in body but not in spirit as he makes his door to door salesman rounds - and impacts the lives of customers during a nearly 50 year career that often finds him a top his firm's sales charts. Kyra Sedgwick, Helen Mirren, and Kathy Baker play women who loom large in Bill's life. And others play the shoe shiners, waitresses, suburbanites, bus drivers and more inspired by him. Door to door. Heart to heart. Bill connects with people. So does this touching movie about his extraordinary life.

Perfect antidote to "O Lucky Man" - Plonquer

"Door-To-Door" arrived here and was watched shortly after "O Lucky Man" with Malcolm McDowell had also been viewed - for the 4 or 5th time by this cultist. Yes, OLM is a cult film. Watch it if you dare.
D-t-D was the perfect antidote to all the squeamishly enjoyable cynicism and black humour that was expressed in OLM.
Perhaps life isn't that bad after all, if guys like Bill Porter can prove that hard work and earnestness can really overcome most, if not all of Mick Travis' sad comical failures in OLM.
Oddly, Helen Mirren plays one of the main characters in both of these films- made forty years apart!
In O Lucky Man, she is one of the sexiest and most heartbreakingly gorgeous babes I have ever seen in the movies. Indeed, forty years later, she still occasionally appears as a succubus in my dreams.
And strangely, this actress still turns me on, even when she plays the part of Bill Porter's grey-haired mom, who suffers from Alzheimer's in Door to Door.
Migod, am I some kind of pervert? "Close your eyes and think of the Queen" I could add.
But then, perhaps it's just echoes rattling around in my brain and nether regions, of what I remembered from O Lucky Man.

I wonder if she accepted this role in D-t-D just to make up for her callous character in O Lucky Man...
Oh yeah, I might add- William H. Macy is damn good in Door to Door also.
See BOTH of these movies! They are worth it. But I suggest you watch "Door to Door" secondly. If only just to recover from O Lucky Man.

Oh this was REALLY good. If you've seen Will Smith's Pursuit of Happyness and found it increasingly depressing - you will be overjoyed with this uplifting film. Along the lines of the same line of Pursuit, this film shows one individuals life long pursuit to remain employed and successful and possibly the expense of happiness.

An Inspiring True Story - Jaybird

This movie will inspire you with its portrayal of Bill Porter. His true-life story is one of a man who, through sheer determination and persistence, succeeds when nobody thought he could. Porter, who is challenged by cerebral palsy, shows that a physical disability does not have to hinder one's ability to contribute to society.

The movie is about Porter's search for work during a period when society doesn't place much value on a handicapped person's ability to be a productive member of the workforce. Porter's persistence eventually pays off, and he is given a job selling door to door products for Watkins on a not-so desirable route. Expected to fail, Porter surprises everyone, and makes it one of the company’s biggest successes

William H. Macy does an incredible job in the lead role, and is almost unrecognizable as Porter. Door to Door is an enjoyable movie that will leave you feeling inspired by a real life hero.
