Best Actor Academy Award winner Fredric March plays the man/monster in the expressionistic, pre-Code 1932 version (Side A), morphing before your eyes into a fiend that impacted the look of Creature Features to come. Spencer Tracy headlines the 1941 film of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of mind and madness (Side B). It's a glossy, star-powered work whose Freudian undercurrents include a dreamscape in which carriage horses whipped by Hyde transform into the women in his life (Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner). Two of the very beast from horror's archives. Two ways to watch appease your inner monster.

early horror classic - sooz

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide wow. surprisingly good. Fredric March does a pretty good job switching between the two roles. i imagine the transformation was considered state-of-the-art at the time. some of the camera work - especially in the opening scene where we see it all through Jekyll's eyes until he steps in front of a mirror - was impressive. i was quite surprised at how candid Mr Hide's behaviour was presented. the brutality against the beautiful, young music hall girl was presented more forthright than i expected.
i enjoyed a lot more than i was expecting too.

The only crimes Mr. Hyde should be charged for is it's tacky remakes.

I rented a Turner classic Movie collection from the local library, with Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner who starred on the side B of this Disc set in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The Black & White set a perfect mood for the entire, the cinemographer's choice in angles and it's technical stage sets made for a great experience at the movies. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will always be a favorite for me and classic film that's timeless and flawless.

Two Very Good Movies - revsdd

What you find here is a couple of truly enjoyable adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson's famous horror story. The basic plot, of course, is the same in both (even down to the addition of a romance for Jekyll and the identification of Hyde's evil acts as being sadistic sexual acts - neither of which are present in Stevenson's book, leading me to believe that the '41 version was based more on the '31 version than on the actual Stevenson work.) The most interesting part of watching both versions back to back is to compare the performances. Frederic March (1931) and Spencer Tracy (1941) are, in my opinion, essentially a saw-off, although Tracy had a more difficult role as Mr. Hyde, without the heavy monster-like makeup March had to give a visual sense of Hyde's evil. Tracy's Hyde was much more human-looking, and in many ways as a result much scarier. I thought the female leads were better in 1931 - Miriam Hopkins stole the show, I thought, in 1931 (even outshining March, who won an Oscar) as Ivy, while Ingrid Bergman was good in the role, but definitely not her equal. I wasn't taken with Rose Hobart's performance as Jekyll's fiance in 1931, but Lana Turner's turn in the role was disappointing - not so much her performance, but her character was less central to the story. Another difference between the two is that the 1931 version is (surprisingly) quite full of sexual innuendo, which isn't absent in the '41 movie but is less overt.

For all that, these are both good movies. A DVD containing both versions offers double the fun.
