Elvis Presley: King Creole

The year was 1958. Everybody's datin' at the drive-in. America launches its first satellite. The novel Lolita stirs up controversy. And Elvis Presley gives Bourbon Street a new beat in King Creole. He plays a troubled youth whose singing sets the French Quarter rockin'. With a sweet girl to love him and nightclubers cheering, it looks like Elvis will shake off his past and head for the top. But will a mobster (Walter Matthau) and his man-trap moll (Carolyn Jones) snare him in a life of crime?

This movie was awesome for Elvis fans. he is so young here and you can tell he's still working on a new trade. The era over acting and special effects are obvious, the story is good for the time. It is a great watch but be in the mood for it. It's filmed in the 50's and a fantastic film for the time.

The King Rules - CaptainRhodes

This is Elvis Presley's finest film,in my opinion. In King Creole you can see the potential of Elvis the actor as opposed to Elvis, the singer who stars in B-grade throwaway films with cheap sets and lackluster,children friendly tunes. This was before the medication took over. Before the boredom took over and before life itself took it's toll. Being a huge fan of Elvis, I have seen this movie several times and it never fails to entertain me. I compare this in quality only to Jailhouse Rock. If only what could have been......

The Grave of A Better Movie - johnn_b

To be honest, we got this movie as part of our post-Katrina film festival, watching movies set in New Orleans. King Creole has some great B&W footage of the French Quarter back in the day. We even thought we spotted the Lafitte's Bar (the old blacksmith shop) but I think it was another similar building.

As a movie, even an Elvis movie, this is an especially poor effort. It's fun watching Walter Matthau play a tough guy, and Carolyn Jones (later to become Morticia Addams of the Addams Family) as an alcoholic moll, and Vic Morrow as a "teenage" hoodlum. The movie also features some truly terrible songs and bad lip synching. A major plot point is whether Danny (Elvis) will ever graduate from High School. Third time's a charm! Compared to later movies like Blue Hawaii, though, this is Citizen Kane. Two or three people die late in the story, and the ending is ambivalent at best, but there is a misguided attempt to make a good dramatic movie (in which Elvis' character becomes a singing star) buried in here somewhere. For Elvis and Walter Matthau completists only, and those who love B&W footage of the old French Quarter. The opening scene, shot on the streets of the Quarter, featuring street vendors singing the praises of their goods, is the best and most affecting part of the movie.
