Enemy Mine

In this visually stunning sci-fi adventure, two warriors engaged in a savage, futuristic war between Earth and the planet Dracon, crash-land on a desolate, fiery planet. At first, the human (Dennis Quaid) and his reptilian, alien opponent (Louis Gossett, Jr.) are intent on destroying each other. But after battling the elements and each other, the two stranded pilots gradually realize that the only way either of them will survive is to overcome their undying hatred.

Highly Overrated By Users - eoguy

Despite several ringing endorsements by Zip users, Enemy Mine is mostly a dud. I've noticed many people defend the film's specical effects (which really aren't that bad) or say it's just a product of the '80s, but while both of those things might be the case, this film really staggers when it comes to the storyline.

The filmmakers tried hard -- too hard -- to make this a socially relevant plot, but it only comes across as a heavy-handed commentary on discrimination and racism, and the strength of loyalty, etc. Most of the time it's so hokey that it almost seems like a parody.

Dennis Quaid's performance is also pretty weak. While he's never been much for subtlety, he's still reltiavely young in his career in this film, and that's especially clear when he's required to emote.Louis Gossett Jr. does a better job, but to say his performance is particularly fantastic is to only search for reasons to compliment the film. He's good -- but his makeup buries his performance.

Overall, you could do better. It's not unwatchable, but I wouldn't rush to get it either.

Enemy Mine is a product of its time, people need to bear in mind when this movie was made. As a whole it’ll never go down as an “epic” movie but I zipped it up for nostalgia and I wasn’t disappointed. You can tell based on reviews which members rented this movie with reasonable expectations and which were looking for the next remake of Star Wars.

Great sci-fi flic! - Rick1

I happen to think that this is one great science fiction movie. The two, alien to each other, characters get stranded on a planet and truly rely on one another to survive. Both Quaid and Gossett Jr. play the characters perfectly, and the viewer can really see the bond between these two grow throughout the film. There are a few surprises along the way, but the chemistry is there. Wolfgang Peterson does what he does best, tells a story, with defining characters, who do their best to get out of a tough situation. Science fiction gold!
