Romance meets comedy in Woody Allen's first movie musical, and it's a glorious celebration of love that had audiences laughing and critics cheering. In interwining stories, Joe's (Woody Allen) attempt to win the heart of Von (Julia Roberts) takes him to scenic Venice and Paris, while his ex-wife Steffi (Goldie Hawn) and her current husband, Bob(Alan Alda), deal with erupting family matters in their swank but crowded Manhattan apartment. In the meantime, Steffi (Drew Barrymore), is torn between two boyfriends (Edward Norton and Tim Roth), adding to the complications. But through it all, Allen's dream cast knows the perfect moment to express their emotions with a classic love song or a hilarious production number. Musicl comedy has seldom been played with such wit, humor and sophistication. Get ready to fall in love with love.. And to sing the praises of Everyone Says I Love You!

Good, but not his best.... - crazyboutmovies

At the time this film was released, it probably would have been seen as quite a groundbreaking work. Viewing it now, it appears to be merely another Woody Allen monologue about his neurosis.

The musical sequences are well done, although the singing is a bit uneven.

There are lines from the movie that are absolutely brilliant, that really reveals much insight into male-female relationships. Too much of the movie, though, strikes me now as being more of the same thing.

Unusual, self-aware, threadbare musical comedy - clauditorium

Unusual, self-aware musical comedy has fun musical numbers (especially the ones set in a hospital and a jewelry store), but the barest thread of a plot (as well as a few disposable subplots). In the end, it’s not much more than a pleasant diversion. The concept – a musical populated by “real” people who can’t really sing and dance – is charming, but director Woody Allen could have done a lot more with it.

Edward Norton has goofy allure, Alan Alda does the best job singing, and Roberts the worst.

What is you made a musical but you cast people before you told them they had to sing? What if they, for the most part, stepped up to the challenge and knocked the sucker out of the park?

With the exception of the pitiful singing by Julia Roberts, the cast consisting of huge stars from Goldie Hawn and Alan Alda to Edward Norton and Drew Barrymore are remarkably good singers. Gaby Hoffman and Natalie Portman are great as over-emotional competing teen sisters; Tim Roth is achingly sexy as an ex-con trying to get into Barrymore's pants; and Natasha Lyonne narrates the film as Woody Allen's daughter who is trying to find herself using various men (as all Allen heroines do), but is hyper-analytical and smart in a way I haven't seen in an Allen film since his masterpiece 'Annie Hall'.

This film is under-rated and excellent, a modern weird upper class musical with Marx Brothers tributes and Goldie Hawn flying through the air.
