Far from a favourite - Moir

A problem with feeling fair in writing a review, I think, is a voice inside questioning to the effect of how if someone is looking for a hockey game and ends up with a bowling show instead can they fairly rate the bowling show? Though I must admit I feel, after reading what I have just typed, that this remark is perhaps leaning over a bit too far in an attempt to be fair.

The actors certainly do competent jobs of comic moments and building a kind of forward momentum out of what feel like caricatures. But the plot felt to me a weak imitation of other stories (like the result of steeping a long exhausted herb tea bag).

If I had had foreknowledge I would not have rented it... {I cannot in fact now recall why I zipped it .. perhaps I was curious about something in the casting I had wondered about... Perhaps some genii twitched my hand and later wiped my memory of the incident?}

One of my.... - Dakos

all time favourites. I have to admit Kevin Kline is geared for these types of roles in wacky comedies. He and Meg Ryan have such a chemistry here. She for me was perfectly cast as one of those "fish out of water" types while he has perfected these type of roles where his bumbling exploits leave to hilarious consequences. Even his French accent and dialogue was believable. Jean Reno was also nicely cast as his cop friend who tries to direct him on the straight and narrow. A must see.

This reminded me a little bit of Addicted to Love, a movie Ryan would star in a few years later. It's an unconventional love story, that puts a fun spin on the traditional Rom/Com formula.

I don't think it's any secret that Ryan and Kline get together, but the road they take to get there is full of bumps and twists and turns, and fun banter between the two.

The film relies heavily on the charm of its two stars to pull it off, and I think they do. Ryan has that likeability, where you just automatically root for her. She's in familiar territory here, playing a somewhat dorky, girl-next-door type.

Kevin Kline is just wonderful. As he's proven before, he's great at comedy, and he and Ryan play off each other beautifully. They have great chemistry both romatically and comedically.

Kline's french accent may be a little exaggerated, but I think it's part of the joke, and when he does speak French (which is quite often), he's actually quite good.

There is a play on stereotypes here, both French, and Canadian (Ryan's dating a Canuck, and living in Canada at the openning). But I didn't think any of it was offensive. Just typical. For instance, we know the dad must be Canadian, because he's watching a hockey game. We know the embassy guy is Canadian, because he says "eh". Just silly stuff.
