Gimme Shelter: The Rolling Stones

Called "the greatest rock film ever made," this landmark documentary follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 U.S. tour. When 300,000 members of the Love Generation collided with a few dozen Hell's Angels at San Francisco's Altamont Speedway, direct cinema pioneers David and Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin immortalized on film the bloody slash that transformed a decade's dreams into disillusionment.

Whoa -- best rockumentary??! Not. - SGRG

I've seen reviews that call this the greatest rock documentary ever (or words to that effect). Maybe that was true when it was made (1968? whenever the Altamont speedway show happened) but the concert footage focuses almost exclusively on Mick Jagger's upper body, with very little footage of the rest of the band; the non-concert footage with the band members shows them (with the exception of Charlie Watts) either not communicating at all with the filmmaker or just getting annoyed at him; and the Altamont footage is very one-dimensional in that it was shot mostly from behind the band. The whole thing seems to have been shot with one camera. For me the most interesting parts concerned the organization/negotiation of the concert location and the footage of the Hells Angels at the show: these are the only parts of the film that show any interesting characters. For a great concern movie, my favourite anyway, try Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii -- no spectators but plenty of great music, performed at Pompeii, and interesting outtakes with the band members.

I had not seen this movie in its entirety before and I must admit that I was quite impressed. Despite this being a documentary, the production team was able to instill a level of suspense and escalation that is quite unusual. It slowly develops to the tragic end that everybody knows in a very dramatic way. Although at first the movie gives the impression of jumping randomly from one 'sub-plot' to another, in the end, it is brilliantly made. Some of the choices of live performances excerpts (pre-Altamont) are a bit questionable but still work well. The bonus material is also quite interesting. If you want to see the dark side of the peace and love era, this is as good a presentation as you will ever find. A great classic.

probably the best rockumentary - Sterman

This is awesome... its so good that i ordered it, watched it...sent it back, and ordered it again. You know sometimes i wonder what rock stars really think when they look at themselves on tv. This documentary is about that. You see mick looking at footage of himself and the band. They also look at the footage of that guy getting stabbed at one of their show. great great great... get this even if you're not a stones fan.
