Broadway gambler Gloves Donahue wants to find who killed the baker of his favorite cheesecake. He sees nightclub singer Leda Hamilton leaving the bakery. When her boss Marty's partner Joe is murdered, Leda and her accompanist Pepi disappear. It turns out that beneath all the mystery is a gang of Nazi operatives planning to blow up a battleship in New York harbor.

Those Nazis Won't Know Hit 'Em - MovieLover5

Like other places have said, this is a bit different for Bogey; one site called the film "a light hearted thriller" and that best sums it up. Bogart does OK with the comedy aspects of the script while sticking to his tough guy persona. The story is basically a bit of early WW2 propaganda so don't look for a story line that makes a whole lot of sense. The film is particularly interesting because of the number of character actors: Peter Lorre, William Demarest, Phil Silvers, Judith Anderson to name just a few. (One of the special features in fact is a look at character actors in Hollywood.)

So, a fun way to spend the better part of 2 hours as long as you're not wanting something too serious.

A Different Side to Bogey - GrannyGran

This is not one of Bogey's better known movies nor is it one of his best but this movie does have a certain charm. First of all, it's basically a comedy & that makes it an unusual vehicle for Bogey. He does have the ability to pull it off though it's not his forte. The film takes place during WWII; Bogey is a bit of a shady character attempting to stop the saboteurs of the Third Reich operating in the U.S.A. The movie has its dramatic moments but it's really plain old entertainment. Phil Silvers has a small role, Jackie Gleason has a smaller one. Enjoy Bogey in a different type of movie, there's a chance you might realize he could do other things other than being a tough guy.

Two Stars for the Cars - upwitharts

The automobiles on display throughout this terrible waste of Humphrey Bogart's talent are gorgeous and fun to watch. Not so much the acting, dialogue, plot (complete with MAJOR holes), etc. Some studio stiffs watched Casablanca and said to each other, quick, make another one, but set the whole thing in New York. We kept expecting Bogart to address the camera and beg us to buy a war bond. Then wink, and say, "now back to the boring movie, sorry." The DVD does contain some interesting shorts, to give you the experience of going to the movies in the 40s. And the supposed anti-smoking reel (which must have been funded by Phillip Morris) is much more fun than the feature film. The Warner Bros. cartoon is typically racist and should be deleted. Whole package should be viewed for historical interest more than anything else.
