Love teaches the hardest lessons in this modern fairy tale from the BBC. Robson Green (Reckless, Touching Evil) stars as Barry, a working-class cop assigned to protect the queen’s youngest son (Rupert Penry-Jones, Charlotte Gray), a new student at Cambridge. Tara Fitzgerald (Brassed Off!, Frenchman’s Creek) is Grace, an American exchange student both men fall for. When the prince proves as inept at love as he is at learning, the macho bodyguard becomes tutor as well as protector, ghostwriting sweet nothings and academic assignments, all the while repressing his own feelings for Grace.

Not quite so harsh - skichick

I do sort of agree with the other reviews, but it wasn't quite that bad. It is an english - if not made for TV, made BY TV - movie that really has that feel that they are trying to cater to all audiences but really reaching none of them. I can't remember the character's name nor in fact her acting name, but the woman who plays the american, is atrocious. Can't act and gosh can we get any more watered down in the attraction between the two leads.

This did not fill my need for a rom-com and thankfully I never let my husband near it.

The Student Prince is one of those movies where you keep thinking – could have been better. Great cast – Robson Green, Tara Fitzgerald & Rupert Penry-Jones are all very good actors & they do what they can with their characters. Unfortunately, the material is just so substandard, they cannot overcome it. If you are expecting a romantic comedy, this is neither romantic nor funny. If you want to see the privileged youth, learning about life from the older, more world weary, blue collar guy, forget it. If you are looking for a film where the upper class twit & lower class intellectual battle it out for the heart of the girl, not going to happen. I agree with Fairweather (AB), this one is a total waste of time.

If you LIKE royals in any way, this is NOT a movie for you. If you would enjoy cruel mockery and a come-uppance against those of the "privileged class" - aka like a Communist overthrow with its hatred of all class distinction - you will like this film.

I had hoped for an entertaining romantic tale of prince-vs-pauper both seeking to woo the same female. This was not that. The homosexual who is also trying to win the Prince (but the Prince is too dense to even see it) adds nothing to any "romantic" setting.

Immorality abounds and is passed off as regular fare. Thoroughly lower class in viewpoint, this title would best be put in the category of "privileged idiot trying to become 'liberated' and 'find himself' and finally getting the help he needs from the underclass" (like they have all the answers - the scene of getting drunk for fun shows what great uses they make of their time and the eventual "answers" he gets are of dubious benefit as you see what he chooses to do with his life). If a royal really DID need to "find himself", he could certainly do better than these low class bums and creeps - in and out of Cambridge. I rate this title a total waste of time.
