Discovered by Marcia Jeffries, Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes is a homespun hobo who's about to become famous. But, as usual, more fame leads to more power and more power leads to more corruption. The film also features many celebrities appearing as themselves (Burl Ives, Mike Wallace, Betty Furness, Bennett Cerf, Faye Emerson, Walter Winchell, and others).

Andy Griffith - mfri

I am a big fan of Andy Griffith. In this movie he plays against type from what he is normally known for, a likable friendly Southerner and role-model father ("Matlock", "The Andy Griffith Show"). He does it very successfully and shows he can actually pull off dramatic roles, also. He plays Lonesome Rhodes- a drunken, angry drifter discovered by Patricia Neal (who is also great) in a jail in Arkansas. As his fame grows, he gets drunk on his own self-importance and thinks he is smarter than the people who actually watch his show. Instead of being thankful for their support, he thinks he can influence them in any way he wants like they are the sheep and he is the shepherd. The evil thoughts he has are shown through his eyes, his evangelist-like speeches, and his over-the-top, roaring laughter. Ironic at the end when he receives his come-uppance from Neal herself. who was responsible for his fame in the first place. Very good supporting performances from Walter Matthau, Lee Remick, and Anthony Franciosa, also. The extras offer good background information in interviews with Griffith and Neal.

Good 'ol boy Andy shines as a self absorbed misfit who happens to get a spot in the highlight and rides that train right off the rails. This film isn't so much of a focus on the changes fame makes on an individual but more so on the gullible masses that eat up everything from that hand. Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes was never a god fearing and honest man who changed overnight as you can see from the opening scene. But a man ready to take what he could when he could. Unpleasant sure, but wouldn't you?

FUN FACT: The Vitajex tablets that Lonesome Rhodes hawks have 6 grains of dextrose, 5 grains of inert material, 2.5 grains of caffeine, and 3.5 grains of aspirin. That's roughly equivalent to a 16 oz café latte and two baby aspirin tablets.

I'd never heard of "A Face In The Crowd" and wondered why. After watching the movie and the interviews with the writer and the stars, I understood. It was way ahead of its time! It's about the medium of television at a time when television was as yet in its infancy; it's powerful, disturbing, eye-opeing, and prophetic in its observations. It's a must-see movie!
