melodramatic 90s flick, a bit long - Scopitone

Christina Ricci and Michelle Williams are so cute and 80s fashioned-out in this depression/college movie. It's a bit melodramatic and the character is very unlikeable but of course she had a traumatic childhood and is suffering from a depression. I liked the tone and the college setting but I did get bored by the end.

Both a Winner and a Loser - c4th

If you are interested in exploring the topic of depression, it makes sense to watch this movie. It provides a lot of insight on two levels. It explains what inflicted individuals experience and accurately portrays the behavioural manifestations those close to them should expect to observe. Let’s clarify that this is essentially a case study of one person struggling with depression. It provides very little as a sociological exploration on the growth in prescription drug use for psychiatric treatment as the title suggests.

As a movie, however, Prozac Nation fails. The art form represented would be more aptly described as a talking book with visual aids. Much of the message could have been delivered through cleverly written dialogue. They clearly had the cast to deliver it, but screenwriters instead took the simple approach of injecting most of the author’s message as a narration delivered in the voice of the main character. Ironically, one could get most of the essentials from this movie lying on their back staring at the ceiling, similar to how most of us picture a patient in a therapy session with their psychiatrist.

Now that I have seen this piece I understand the conflicting reviews. As an exploration of the topic of depression, Prozac Nation is a winner. As a movie, it’s a loser. Decide what motivates you to consider this movie and make your decision.

I can understand why Christina Ricci was attracted to this role, because it's a tough challenge for a young actor to pull off. But at the same time, it doesn't mean it's a movie worth watching. Both Ricci and Jessica Lange are quite good together, and so is Anne Heche actually, but movie never seems to come alive - instead, it just kinda goes from one "isn't she awful" moment to another. I dunno... I would skip it.
