An epic love story set in the politically turbulent, mid 18th century Quebec. In this vibrant colony, poverty and wealth rub shoulders, and the Amerindian and peasant communities struggle to live together within a system that is unjust.

Frollywood - Rural_Ontario

The TV lighting and squeaky clean costumes reminded me of the sixties hairdo's in Doctor Zhivago. Everyone looks and sounds very 2005, but the score is as emotionally manipulative as any from 1965. I have to admit that as rarely as I ever give up on a film, at under one hour I checked the length and decided I couldn't invest 145 minutes in this.

The protrail of a notorious criminal in the French-Canadian saga - La Corriveau- is completely false in this film. The lead character is an intelligent, free-spirited, and righteous woman while the real-life woman was truly evil. The atmosphere is rather fake, with most of the scenes filmed on an over-done stage. As a French-Canadian waiting to view a Qu/becois film about my Heritage, I was quite disappointed. If you want to see a cheezy love story, fine. But be warned that this is NOT a historically accurate drama.

Good but Could have been much better - Blue_Bird

This movie got the potentiel of a much better movie. However, I think they just missed the chance.
It was probably the immitation of couple other movies together. For some reason, I did not like it so much. It is not so genuine perhaps. Movies with such big production, scenery, and story would have made, as I said, a much better movie. Just some details that I could not get: The super kindness of Marie Lou and her frienshipadoption of the indian girl. Is that in the directior dreams? In never been this way in Quebec, now or before. If a the young girl is so fluent in aboriginal language, Quebec and Canada would have a large population of people speaking such language.Conslusion: political propaganda. Same thing applies to the hyper kindness towards the black servant. I understand that it is fiction and the writer are free to say what they want. The only thing is that when it is put in a historical context, it is not always readily accepted.
This does not mean that it is a bad movie. Actually, the second half is quite thrilling and capturing. So, in conclusion, it would not be a bad idea to rent this movie, but dont get bored too quickly!
