fun but flawed - story1

If you can get past the inconsistencies in plot you'll enjoy this very much. Don't look for much beyond a swash-buckler - great sword fights - although the actors are first rate. That being said, I normally like the work of Daniel Auteil but did find him out of place in this. As well the central relationship between him and a certain young lady was a little troubling in the end.

Beauty and the beast - Neil1

I detest subtitles but 'Le Bossu', translated (sic) On Guard (sic), is so much fun the head-bobbing is worth the effort. The liner notes indicate it's close to three hours, which gave me pause, but it turned out be only two, and I was wishing they hadn't deleted those scenes. Daniel Auteuil is the enormously captivating swordsman Lagardere, who, upon his Lord's demise at the hand of his scoundrel cousin (and potential heir), and assuming the man's newly-betrothed to have also been murdered by the cousin's gang, adopts their infant daughter Aurore. In order to conceal the child from her would-be assassins he joins a passing circus, and (naturally) she blossoms into a winsome addition to the troupe. Under pressure to satisfy her growing curiousity he passes on the story of her noble birth, along with her father's devastating fencing technique (la botte de Nevers). Lagardere eventually carries out his vow to avenge Nevers, disguising himself as a hunchback (La Bossu) in order to get into the villain's good graces. It is when he is 'in disguise' that he and Aurore inchoately declare their love for each other and, in the end (with her mother's blessing), seal it with a kiss.

This is a film in the true tradition of historical epics! Daniel Auteuil is always worth watching- this role shows him as serious, humorous and a very talented swordsman! There is no doubt who the heroes and villains are- a piece of Renaissance France with all the colour and zest for life.
