A 12th Century commoner (Orlando Bloom) finds himself thrust into a decades-long war. A stranger in a strange land, he serves a doomed king, falls in love with an exotic and forbidden queen, and rises to knighthood. Ultimately, he must protect the people of Jerusalem from overwhelming forces – while striving to keep a fragile peace.

Ridley Scott almost pulls of a classic here. He does a fine job of mixing fact with fiction with characters from medieval times that are geographically located in the part of our world where headlines are featured everyday. So, the viewer is familiar with the location, people's and who hasn't heard about the Crusades. To this very day, some Muslim communities are still angered about what happened 1,000 years ago. Talk about long memories! We travel from France to the Holy Land where a man is in search of his religion which he believes has left him due to some unfortunate circumstances. In the end, he discovers, that people, whatever their belief, are the same everywhere. The same wants, desires and needs. Acting is solid and a love affair, a la Robin Hood, is thrown in to make the movie more Hollywood and satisfy the accountants & producers - ka-ching!

Ridley Scott is one of the best directors of films of our times. Kingdom Of Heaven is an exciting reminder, for the uninitiated, of the period of The Crusades, when Christian Europeans marched off to The Holy Land in order to protect its holy sites from the Muslim onslaught. Told through the eyes of a young man who leaves his village in France, and ends up defending the city of Jerusalem from Saladin's army, this epic has a good story, an element of history, and a lot of great sweeping battles and action (some pretty gory). Ignore the bad press and see this film. It's well worth the time and money. Two thumbs up!

In true Ridley Scott fashion.... - NakedMoose

Another Ridley Scott masterpiece with breathtaking cinematography, a moving soundtrack and a great story set in the 11th C AD (during the period of the Crusades). Not for the weak of heart, the fight/battle scenes are in true Ridley Scott fashion - gory but not overdone. The siege on Jerusalem, though, is something else, as it gives you a realistic depiction of ancient siege warfare (and for those historical buffs, check out The Pilgrim's Guide for a treat on historical facts and figures).

The portrayals of Balian (Orlando Bloom) and Godfrey (Liam Neeson) are also memorable with Godfrey as the consummate teacher and Balien as a reluctant hero, who when all is said and done, prefers to live the honest and simple life.

If you want an entertaining movie where you can sit back but also learn a little bit about ancient times, you'll enjoy this movie!
