The Deer Hunter (Special Edition)
This powerful motion picture tracks a group of steelworker pals from a Pennsylvania blast furnace to the cool hunting grounds of the Alleghenies to the lethal cauldron of Vietnam. Robert DeNiro gives an outstanding performance as Michael, the natural leader of the group.
THE DEER HUNTER
is a searing drama of friendship and courage, and what happens to these qualities under hardship; it is a shattering emotional experience you will never forget.

Very nice look at the human side of vets

Positive: Excellent storyline, great acting, cinematography and ending. While there was a whole slew of vietnam war vet movies in the 1980s, this is best. You get a feel for the characters. Very nice movie. Also great scenes, especially the classic and infamous russian roullete scene will simply remain with the viewer for years to come.
Negative: Well the movie is very long. Almost three hours and for novices this can be tedious but the movie grows on you with later vieweings.
Conclusion: Very nice vet movie, the ending is especially poignant.
classic war genre film

The cast is amazing, and Christopher Walken delivers one of the best performances of his career.
The things that keep this film from receiving a full five stars from me: the pacing is too uneven by modern standards. This edition was a 3 hour film. While this helps to build the characters, it really is too long for the material. Unfortunately, once past the first act, some other sequences are too brief. Die-hard film fans will be able to hang on, but the impatient may not feel the effort is worthwhile.
Sometimes uncomfortable to watch, this is a modern classic in the war film genre.

I Totally agree with Cathy. I also find that the movie also centers around the affect on the community the Vietnam war has had on it. I remember reading a review for this film and The reviewer, now in his 40's, explains how he's from a small American community and remembers plenty of broken homes and stories from family/friends about lost loved ones because of the Vietnam war. I'm sure this movie hits closer to the hearts of these types of people.
I also find this is one of the only war movies where you get to see the soldiers as people as well as seeing them as soldiers.
The first half was a little long but I find it was necessary, it helped you to connect with person before seeing him as a soldier. I also like how in the first act it shows the characters' naivety towards the war (especially when the speak to the green Beret soldier) and come out of it totally blown away by the reality of it all. in their minds, war was a game, like hunting deer, then they realized it was much more than that.
