Malcolm McDowell rules! - CaptainRhodes

Great movie, great performance from Malcolm McDowell. If ya wanna see a nutball in action, this is the movie for ya.

Fun To Watch Malcolm! - Jeefster

I was about 10 minutes into this movie before I realized that the character playing Evilenko was indeed Malcolm McDowell! The transformation is incredible! And that's probably the best bit of the movie, even though it was quite watchable and actualy played pretty close to the real life killings done by Andrei Chikatilo.
I had read a book about the true brutal slayings in modern Russia- serial killers in Russia? Never!- and if you had that as background material then watched this movie you would see that it is very closely related to the truth. But not without much artistic license added for the Hollywood effect. This is by no means a big budget film and is not preoccupied with showng the horrific brutality that accompanied the victims corpses, but instead looks at the whole ordeal from the psychological viewpoint. It was interesting to watch how this was handled, sometimes almost laughably unbelievable, but decent actng managed to pull this one off. And that's a good thing as Malcolm's career has sent him through movies that range from pretty good to horrific.
If you like a fairly good thriller with an already known outcome, delivered by smaller name actors then grab this one. It's a "B" movie that easily could have been an A lister with a more serious budget. And some more CGI gore would have enhanced the seriousness of this monster's crimes, and I believe would have brought about an intensity that seemed to be missing from the picture as a whole. In real life his murders were more like massacres, such as witnessed in the Ripper murders in London. You want us to be horrified? Then show us so we can feel the same disgust and frustration that the authorities, who had such a hard time catching this guy, felt.

This movie had its ups and downs. Mcdowell was good in the role, Csokas was serviceable, but I think he plays the same guy, with the same look in all the movies he's in. The real story is very creepy but this film veers off. Parts of it seemed really silly and cheesy, mostly when the film leaves Evilenko and focuses on Csokas family or the interplay between the law enforcement.
The score is hella chilling, watch out for the credits.
