Child Bride of Short Creek

A star-crossed romance set against a backdrop of polygamy.

In July of 1953, Arizona state troopers invaded Short Creek, a remote desert town north of the Grand Canyon. In this village resides a small group of religious polygamists whose lives were ruled by a group of sect elders known as The Brethern. Against this backdrop develops a tale of an unlikely star-crossed romance. Nineteen-year-old Isaac King (Christopher Atkins) returns from the Korean War to become frustrated and discouraged by his village's blind acceptance of the Brethren's strict doctrines. He falls in love with Jessica Ray Jacobs (Diane Lane), a lovely, curious fifteen-year-old who is promised in marriage to Isaac's father Frank (Conrad Bain), the devout town leader. Rebelling against Short Creek's codes, the youngsters plan to run away, but the unexpected invasion alters the course of their love forever.

I have to agree that the video quality was a real drawback to this DVD, which I assume was simply taken from the VHS tape and not re-edited for quality.
Helen Hunt and several others make this a good portrayal, but one does have to wonder how dissatisfied the people in this community would have been: after all, many would have felt this lifestyle was a calling from God, and the many interviews of members of similar communities seem to show that most are quite happy with the arrangements.
What it does show pretty effectively is that the only crime in the community is that of polygamy -- which is only a crime to rid the country of polygamists. Aside from the age at which the girls are given as wives, there is nothing in this movie that would indicate there is anything amiss, except for our prejudice against polygamy. [A prejudice that is being considered by the court right now.]
Like any other marital arrangement, there would be some who would like it, and others not. That comes out in the movie as well. 'Based on a true story' does not tell us how close to the story it really is, especially when it comes to the motivations and emotions of the characters.
Watch it; enjoy it, but don't think this is the definitive work regarding the practice of polygamy.

Although I enjoyed the movie, the video quality was very poor, considering the fact that Child Bride of Short Creek was filmed in 1981. I would have enjoyed the movie more if the video quality had been better, because I found it to be a distraction.

If you're interested in the early acting careers of Diane Lane and Helen Hunt, although Helen Hunt had quite a bit of acting experience prior to 1981, you might want to rent this movie, despite the poor video quality.

Child Bride of Short Creek is based on a true story so, if you are curious about polygamy and how it affects teenagers in these communities, you may wish to rent this movie. When I was 15, I certainly would have rebelled if I had been forced into a marriage with someone old enough to be my grandparent. The children in Short Creek obviously felt the same way.
